SPOTTY STORMS TODAY AND INTO WEEKEND; WARM TEMPS TO CONTINUE… Widely scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible across south Alabama and northwest Florida on this Friday. It certainly will not rain all day in any given community across the region, but isolated downpours will be possible. Any rain received across the region is highly beneficial at this point as the ongoing drought continues to worsen. Widespread severe storms are not expected today. High temperatures will be in the low 80s inland with upper 70s likely closer to the beaches and bays. Scattered thunderstorms will be possible on Saturday and Sunday as well.

ACTIVE WEATHER TO OUR NORTHWEST TODAY AND THIS WEEKEND… The Storm Prediction Center has included parts of Oklahoma and the Great Plains region in their Level 3 (out of 5) enhanced severe weather risk valid for today into tonight. Damaging wind gusts, large hail, and tornadoes will be possible in those zones.

LOW-END SEVERE WEATHER RISK LOCALLY TOMORROW… Tomorrow will be quite similar to today with scattered thunderstorms being possible across south Alabama and northwest Florida. Technically, the Storm Prediction Center has included parts of west Alabama in their low-end, Level 1 (out of 5) severe weather risk zone on Saturday, however, this is in place due to the potential for an advancing line of storms to reach the area Saturday evening or early Sunday morning. The chances of any severe weather locally this weekend seem rather low, despite the risk zone being in place. If you have outdoor plans on Saturday, I would definitely proceed with the plans. Have a way to keep tabs on the radar. You can visit the Radar tab of the RedZone Weather app. I will be posting updates, as needed, in the RedZone Weather app.

ROUND OF STORMS POSSIBLE BY MIDWEEK LOCALLY… We will continue to be in somewhat of an unsettled pattern through the weekend and into early next week with multiple rounds of scattered storms being possible. High temperatures will be in the 80s with morning lows in the 60s into next week.

“MELISSA” RETIRED FROM HURRICANE NAMING LISTS… The World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the agency in charge of maintaining the worldwide hurricane/tropical naming lists, has retired the name “Melissa” from their rotating naming lists. Hurricane Melissa slammed into Jamaica as a category 5 hurricane and caused extreme damage and loss of life. Due to this, the WMO retired the name “Melissa” from ever being used for a tropical/hurricane name. Their annual meeting happens once per year, usually in early March. The meeting this year was apparently held in Mexico City. The name “Melissa” has been replaced by the name “Molly” in the 2031 naming list. The 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season will kick off on June 1.
