HOT, BUT LESS HUMID, TODAY & TOMORROW; HIGHER RAIN CHANCES THIS WEEKEND… Plenty of sunshine and hot temperatures are expected across south Alabama and northwest Florida on this Wednesday. High temperatures will be in the low 90s today and tomorrow with ever so slightly lower humidity values. Only a few, brief showers and thunderstorms will happen later today. Count yourself as blessed if you get rain as most of us will remain dry across the region. Most communities will remain dry through the end of the workweek before showers and thunderstorms increase in coverage this weekend. Today is the 6th anniversary of the landfall of Hurricane Sally and the 22nd anniversary of Hurricane Ivan – two storms that won’t soon be forgotten across south Alabama and northwest Florida.

SLIGHTLY LESS HUMIDITY THROUGH TOMORROW… An easterly flow will usher slightly drier air into the region today and tomorrow. It will still be hot, but the humidity should be a bit less oppressive compared to recent days. That same easterly flow will create hazardous beach conditions. A High Risk of rip currents is expected at Alabama and northwest Florida beaches today and Thursday, with surf potentially building into the 4-5 foot range. Please heed the red flags and rip current warnings if you’re headed to the beach.

LOW RAIN CHANCES THROUGH FRIDAY… Rain chances are low today, but not completely zero. A few isolated showers or thunderstorms may happen across the region today. Tomorrow will likely be dry across the entire region. Only a very small chance of a shower or storm returns Friday, meaning the overwhelming majority of communities will stay dry through the end of the workweek.

SCATTERED SHOWERS & STORMS INCREASE IN COVERAGE THIS WEEKEND… Moisture will begin returning Saturday as an upper-level low approaches the northeastern Gulf. This will allow scattered showers and thunderstorms to become more numerous Saturday and Sunday. Saturday will still feature dry conditions for much of the day, but greater storm coverage is expected by Sunday. This does not look like an all-day washout, but it does look like an uptick in the overall coverage of pop-up storms.

MORE POP-UP STORMS INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK… Higher rain chances will persist Sunday into Monday and Tuesday as deeper moisture remains in place. Scattered, pop-up showers and thunderstorms will be possible each day, with rain chances generally in the 30-50% range across much of the region. Temperatures will ease slightly, with highs mainly in the upper 80s and low 90s Monday and mostly in the upper 80s Tuesday.

TROPICS: DISTURBANCE IN NORTH-CENTRAL ATLANTIC… The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a trough of low pressure well east-southeast of Bermuda. Showers and thunderstorms associated with this system remain disorganized, and development is not expected during the next 48 hours. Conditions may become more favorable later this week as the disturbance moves slowly westward to west-northwestward. NHC indicates a 40% chance of a tropical depression forming over the next 7 days.

TROPICS: GULF & CARIBBEAN REMAIN QUIET… The National Hurricane Center is not highlighting any tropical disturbances in the Gulf or Caribbean Sea at this point. Great news!

REMEMBERING HURRICANE SALLY – SIX YEARS AGO TODAY… Hurricane Sally, the slow-moving storm that ultimately moved ashore at Gulf Shores, Alabama, made landfall six years ago today in the very early morning hours. Wind damage was particularly bad in parts of Baldwin, Escambia (FL), and Santa Rosa counties. Sally caused 3+ feet of rainfall in parts of the region, leading to significant flooding, including across inland areas near Brewton and Flomaton. We provided multiple, long-form rounds of live coverage during the storm. Despite the damage, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the group responsible for maintaining the hurricane naming lists, controversially did not retire the name Sally from the lists. Hurricane Sally made landfall on the 16th anniversary, almost to the hour, at nearly the exact same place as Hurricane Ivan.

REMEMBERING HURRICANE IVAN – 22 YEARS AGO TODAY… Hurricane Ivan remains the “benchmark storm” for many people in south Alabama and northwest Florida, in other words, the worst storm of memory. Ivan was a long-lived, classic Cape Verde hurricane that originated in the Atlantic Ocean. After moving through the Caribbean Sea and lashing Jamaica as a category 5 hurricane, Ivan moved into the southern Gulf. The major hurricane roared ashore at Gulf Shores, Alabama as a category 3 storm. Ivan caused extensive and widespread damage across the region, knocking down hundreds of thousands of trees. The storm is also responsible for one of the largest hurricane-induced tornado outbreaks in U.S. history.
