Beneficial rain for many communities on Thursday!

HOT TEMPS, FEW SHOWERS LATER TODAY; RAIN & STORMS LIKELY LOCALLY THURSDAY… Isolated showers and perhaps a few thunderstorms will be possible on this Monday across south Alabama and northwest Florida. Most of the rain and storms will happen between 1PM and 8PM. Not every community will have rain before the end of the day. Many communities will likely remain dry into the evening hours. High temperatures will be in the low to mid 90s across the region. More hot days are coming up on Tuesday and Wednesday ahead of rain and thunderstorms being likely on Thursday as a cold front approaches from the northwest.

A FEW SHOWERS TODAY, TOMORROW, & WEDNESDAY… Today, tomorrow, and Wednesday will be quite similar with temperatures peaking in the 90s each afternoon. Widely scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible, primarily in the P.M. hours. Any rain is beneficial at this point as drought conditions have become quite a bit worse over the last few weeks. High temperatures will be in the low 90s over the next few days with morning lows in the mid 60s.

LOW-END SEVERE WEATHER RISK MAY SET UP ON THURSDAY… It has been quite some time since our local area has had active weather. That changes on Thursday as a cold front approaches our area from the northwest. This front will cause scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms to develop on Thursday. Some of the storms may be strong or marginally severe with gusty winds being the primary concern. This does not look like a significant tornado threat, but it also may be a deal where a tornado warning or two can’t completely be ruled out. It is a bit too early to determine a specific time frame for severe storms but right now, the daytime hours of Thursday seem to be most conducive. Please check in for updates over the next few days ahead of this event.

DRIER, SLIGHTLY COOLER CONDITIONS THIS WEEKEND… Lingering showers may be possible on Friday morning but we will trend drier overall on Friday evening and into the upcoming weekend. High temperatures will be in the mid to upper 80s this weekend after the passage of the cold front. Overnight lows will be near the 60 degree mark on Saturday morning.

TROPICS: GULF & CARIBBEAN QUIET, FOR NOW… Quite a bit of activity is happening in the tropics, but thankfully, for now, the Gulf and Caribbean Sea remain quiet with no tropical storms expected to develop over the next 5-7 days. Hurricane season is still ongoing, and despite the lack of significant activity so far this year in the Gulf and Caribbean, we all know that can change very quickly. Some of the most intense storms our region has seen happened in the month of October, including (but certainly not limited to) Hurricane Opal in October 1995 and Hurricane Michael in October 2018. Once we get through October, activity usually ramps down significantly in the month of November. Hurricane season officially ends on November 30.

TROPICS: TROPICAL WAVE APPROACHING NORTHERN LESSER ANTILLES… The National Hurricane Center (NHC) flagged a tropical wave with a 20% chance of becoming a named tropical storm in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean over the next few days. This system is located about 500 miles east of the Lesser Antilles right now. Interests in the Carolinas and the U.S. East Coast should closely monitor the progress of this system. Here is the NHC discussion: “A tropical wave located more than 500 miles to the east of the Leeward Islands is currently is producing a small area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms as it moves quickly westward. Earlier satellite-derived wind data indicated the wave does not have a closed circulation. Environmental conditions appear only marginally conducive for further development over the next several days as the wave continues to move quickly westward to west-northwestward at around 20 mph. By the latter part of this week, the system is expected to slow down and turn more northwestward to the north of Hispaniola. Regardless of development, the system is expected to bring gusty winds and showers for portions of the Leeward Islands on Tuesday.”

TROPICS: TROPICAL WAVE IN EASTERN ATLANTIC… Another, separate tropical wave is located in the open waters of the central Atlantic Ocean well to the southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. This system has a 50-60% chance of becoming a named tropical storm over the next few days. Interests in Bermuda should closely monitor the progress of this system. Too early to know for sure where this feature ends up but most of the model guidance shows a recurving into the northern Atlantic well to the east of the U.S.

TROPICS: GABRIELLE MOVING NORTH EAST OF BERMUDA… Gabrielle, the tropical storm located just a few hundred miles southeast of Bermuda, will likely miss the island to the east in the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Gabrielle is expected to turn northeast and move out to sea in the days ahead. Direct impacts from Gabrielle are not expected in the continental United States.

Storms probably won’t last long in any locale.
