Storms are rapidly firing up near Brewton, East Brewton, Atmore, Davisville, Walnut Hill, and Carolina… These storms are not severe, but they are producing heavy rain and plenty of cloud-to-ground lightning! ⛈ pic.twitter.com/3GXLS6qHvi

BIG STORM IN OKALOOSA COUNTY… Showers and storms are getting somewhat of a later start today across much of south Alabama and northwest Florida. At the moment, very heavy rain is falling across the northwestern part of Okaloosa County near Baker, Milligan, and Crestview. This storm is producing very heavy rain and quite a bit of lightning.
Several small storms have also popped up across the region. We’ll be watching these tiny storms very carefully to see if they can grow larger. Severe weather is not expected today, but these small storms absolutely can (and do) “pack a punch” with very heavy rain and lightning!
Storms will begin to fade after sunset.

STORMS IN CHOCTAW COUNTY… Other than a few storms in west Alabama near Butler in Choctaw County AND a few storms in the Wiregrass in Coffee, Henry, and Geneva counties, all other parts of southern Alabama remain dry as of 1:43PM. Northwest Florida is also dry, other than a few storms on the southern sides of Walton and Bay counties.
Showers and thunderstorms will likely pop up across our region in the hours ahead. Be ready for scattered downpours of heavy rain. Severe weather is not expected today.

Low-end chance that a tropical area of low pressure could develop as it moves eastward in the days ahead… Most models recurve the system out into the open waters of the Atlantic, regardless of development. pic.twitter.com/2s9rFZlplQ

STORMS OVER WEST ALABAMA… Washington County has been the hotspot in our region where thunderstorms are getting their start today. Storms near Chatom and the Alabama Highway 17 corridor are drifting northward. We also note that small storms have formed across the western half of Clarke County over the last hour.
REGIONWIDE STORMS THIS AFTERNOON… I expect more showers and thunderstorms to pop up over the next few hours across south Alabama and northwest Florida. Widespread severe weather is not expected, but storms will produce heavy downpours of rain, lots of lightning, and perhaps gusty winds at times.
I’ll have radar updates this afternoon here in the RZWeather app.
No need for any major forecast changes… Scattered storms, heat, and humidity continue to be the story across south Alabama & NW Florida. pic.twitter.com/5piSBc5fBA

SCATTERED STORMS AGAIN THIS AFTERNOON… Another round of showers and thunderstorms will pop up this afternoon into this evening across south Alabama and northwest Florida. We’ve settled into a typical weather pattern for late August after a brief respite from the rain/storms last week. Widespread severe weather won’t happen today (the tornado risk is basically zero), but you know the drill in that the thunderstorms that do develop today will produce heavy rain, gusty winds, and ample lightning. High temperatures today will make a run at the mid-90s with heat index values in excess of 100° across the area.
MORE INTERMITTENTLY WET DAYS AHEAD… Rain chances will remain at or just above climatological values over the next few days, meaning we have a 30-50% chance of rain in each of the next 7 days. Typically in late August, the only thing that can change our persistent weather pattern featuring these afternoon storms and abundant heat is a hurricane/tropical system. Fortunately, the tropics remain quiet. Speaking of the tropics…
QUIET ATLANTIC BASIN… The Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and north Atlantic remain eerily quiet for late August. Tropical/hurricane activity typically peaks in the Atlantic basin between August 15 and October 15. So far this year, QUIET. We note an absolutely massive plume of Saharan dust continues to blanket much of the tropical Atlantic Ocean between Africa and the Antilles, basically starving any tropical waves of necessary moisture to “thrive.” This is good news. It only takes ONE hurricane to make it a memorable year, but “so far, so good.” Let’s hope this trend continues into September!
I’ve got all the forecast details for you in your Tuesday #rzw forecast video that will be posted within the next hour here in the RZWeather app… Enjoy the day!

ISOLATED STORMS DRIFTING NORTHWEST… Storms are small and isolated this evening, but are nonetheless producing very heavy downpours of rain near Andalusia, Straughn, Heath, Gantt, Lottie, Rabun, Perdido, and Fulton.
There is nothing in the way of severe weather, but these tiny storms can certainly “pack a punch” with very heavy rain and cloud-to-ground lightning. Storms will begin to fade after we start to lose daytime heat content after sunset.
