DRY TODAY; RAIN RETURNS SUNDAY; A FEW STRONG STORMS POSSIBLE NEAR COAST… Nice weather continues across the region on this Friday. High temperatures will be around the 80 degree mark. Cloud coverage will increase across the region this afternoon into this evening ahead of mostly cloudy skies on Saturday. Rain returns to our local area on Sunday ahead of an advancing front. Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms may become possible near the Alabama and northwest Florida beaches on Sunday. This is a potential I will be closely monitoring over the next 48 hours. I will have the latest details delivered to you in the RedZone Weather app.
LOW-END, LEVEL 1 (OUT OF 5) SEVERE WEATHER RISK SUNDAY POSSIBLE… There are question as to just how far inland a warm front will move on Sunday before a cold front arrives from the west. If this warm front remains offshore on Sunday, there would be no severe weather for land areas. If, however, this warm front is able to move further inland, it would increase the risk of a few strong to severe storms across the local area, including some risk of tornadoes. The Storm Prediction Center may introduce a low-end, Level 1 (out of 5) severe weather risk for part of our local area valid for Sunday.
BENEFICIAL RAIN ON SUNDAY… Regardless of if the severe weather risk materializes on Sunday, we are expecting beneficial rainfall across the entire region at times. 1 to 2 inches of total rainfall will likely be the norm with higher rain amounts to our west across parts of Louisiana and Mississippi.
TROPICS: TROPICAL STORM MELISSA TO STRENGTHEN INTO POWERFUL HURRICANE… Tropical Storm Melissa has prompted a Tropical Storm Warning and a Hurricane Watch for Jamaica. The system is expected to continue to very slowly moving north over the next few days before slowly turning west and potentially rapidly strengthening early next week. This could be a major hurricane impact for Jamaica in a few days. Interests in Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, Cuba, and Haiti should closely monitor the progress of Melissa.
