SPOTTY STORMS TODAY; UNSETTLED PATTERN THRU THURSDAY… Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible throughout the day and into this evening across south Alabama and northwest Florida. Widespread severe storms are not expected but we probably will have some rain and intermittent thunderstorms at times. Rain chances will decrease a bit as we get into the overnight hours and into Tuesday ahead of higher rain chances coming back on Wednesday ahead of a cold front slated to move by later this week. High temperatures on this Monday will be in the mid 80s.
RAIN AND STORMS AT TIMES MIDWEEK… Rain chances will increase on Wednesday into Thursday with scattered showers and thunderstorms being possible across much of the region. These showers and storms will develop in response to an advancing cold front. It won’t rain all day on Wednesday or on Thursday but we probably will have rain around at times. For now, the overall threat of any severe storms remains quite low.
DRIER PATTERN THIS WEEKEND… Rain chances decrease significantly after Thursday. A cold front is expected to move through the Deep South later this week, specifically on Friday. This means slightly drier, cooler air will move into south Alabama and northwest Florida by Saturday and Sunday. High temperatures will be in the low 80s with morning lows in the upper 50s inland and low 60s closer to the coast.
RIP CURRENT WARNING: RED FLAGS AT LOCAL BEACHES THIS WEEK… There is a high risk of rip currents at all of the Alabama and Northwest Florida beaches today, tonight, and tomorrow. Red flags will be flying at many, if not all, of the local beaches through tomorrow. If you happen to be headed to the beach over the next day or so, be aware that the Gulf is producing many rip currents.
TROPICS: WEAK AREA OF LOW PRESSURE NEAR LOUISIANA COAST… One of the reasons our local area will be having spotty showers and thunderstorms today is due to the proximity of an area of low pressure in the northern Gulf that is drifting toward the Louisiana coast. This system is not expected to become a tropical storm before it moves ashore (development probabilities remain near 0%) but rain will continue to be possible across parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and northwest Florida due to this feature today into tonight.
TROPICS: 70% CHANCE OF TROPICAL STORM FORMATION IN ATLANTIC… There is a high chance of a new tropical storm developing this week in the open waters of the central Atlantic Ocean. This system won’t be a threat to land over the next few days. From NHC: “A broad area of low pressure associated with a tropical wave continues to produce a large area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms several hundred miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands. Environmental conditions appear conducive for additional development of this system, and a tropical depression is likely to form this week as it moves quickly across the central tropical Atlantic, approaching portions of the Leeward Islands by the latter part of this week. Interests there should monitor the progress of this system.”
