SCATTERED STORMS TODAY; FLASH FLOODING & ISOLATED SEVERE STORMS POSSIBLE… Scattered thunderstorms will be possible throughout the day on this Friday and into this evening, particularly in areas north of Interstate 10. Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible with gusty winds being the main concern. The overall tornado risk is quite low today, but a brief tornado cannot completely be ruled out. My biggest concern is the potential for flash flooding again today. Keep in mind that because of the extreme rain amounts some locales had yesterday, it won’t take much rain to cause rapid flash flooding. In addition, aerial/long form flooding on rivers and creeks has become a concern. Spotty storms will be possible again on Saturday and Sunday, mostly in the afternoon and evening hours.
FLASH FLOOD THREAT MAXIMIZED INLAND… Just like what happened yesterday, the overall risk of flash flooding will be maximized across inland areas of southwest Alabama and the interior regions of northwest Florida, north of I-10. 1-3” of rainfall will be the norm across much of the region. That normally would not be a problem, but today it absolutely is a significant problem as parts of the region had 8-12” of rainfall in less than 18 hours yesterday. Have a way to hear Flash Flood Warnings today!
LOW-END SEVERE WEATHER RISK… The Storm Prediction Center continues to include much of south Alabama and northwest Florida in their low-end, Level 1 (out of 5) severe weather risk valid through tonight. This is in place due to the potential for a few, brief severe storms capable of producing damaging wind gusts. The overall tornado risk today is quite low. It’s not zero, but it’s low. We will “go live” across our platforms if any tornado warnings are required locally today.
MORE POP-UP STORMS SATURDAY AND SUNDAY… Scattered thunderstorms will be the norm on Saturday and Sunday, mostly in the afternoon and evening hours. I do think there will be more in the way of sunshine at times this weekend, but pop-up storms will be possible each day. High temperatures will be in the upper 80s with lows in the mid 70s.
TROPICS QUIET… The Gulf, Caribbean, and Atlantic are quiet with no new tropical storms expected to form over the next 5-7 days.
