SCATTERED STORMS TODAY; HEAT & HUMIDITY INCREASE LATER THIS WEEK… Scattered, pop-up showers and thunderstorms will be possible across south Alabama and northwest Florida on this Monday. It will not rain all day in any given spot, but some communities (especially locales further inland) have a better chance of having a downpour before the end of the day. Any storms that develop will be capable of producing heavy rain, loud thunder, cloud-to-ground lightning, and gusty winds today. Widespread severe weather is not expected today. High temperatures will range from the upper 80s at the Alabama and northwest Florida beaches to the low 90s across most inland areas. Dewpoints will remain in the mid to upper 70s, pushing heat index values into the 100-108° range this afternoon. Overnight lows will be muggy once again, generally in the low to mid 70s.
SLIGHTLY LOWER RAIN CHANCES TUESDAY INTO MIDWEEK… An upper ridge of high pressure building over the northern Gulf Coast will promote more subsidence in the atmosphere and slightly drier air aloft on Tuesday and Wednesday. That will likely translate into SLIGHTLY lower rain chances tomorrow and Wednesday. A few spotty, mainly afternoon showers and thunderstorms will be possible, but many communities will remain dry. High temperatures on Tuesday and Wednesday will generally be in the low to mid 90s across the region. Heat index values will continue to be in the triple digits each afternoon.
HOTTER & DRIER LATE WEEK INTO THE WEEKEND… The upper ridge is expected to strengthen and shift a bit farther north over the Southeast late this week. As that happens, rain chances trend downward Thursday through Sunday, with most communities staying dry. At the same time, temperatures will creep upward. Highs later this week and into the weekend are expected to be in the mid to upper 90s in many communities locally. The combination of hotter air temperatures and high humidity will push heat indices well into the 100s each afternoon. I would not be surprised if heat index values are closer to 110° as we get into the weekend.
TROPICS: TWO DISTURBANCES IN THE ATLANTIC… The National Hurricane Center is monitoring two tropical disturbances pushing into the central Atlantic Ocean. One system in the central tropical Atlantic has a 20% chance of becoming a named tropical storm over the next 7 days. This is the weaker of the two systems. A second tropical wave pushing into the eastern Atlantic Ocean from the west coast of Africa has a higher, 40% chance of development over the next 7 days. Both of these systems are well away from land and far from the Gulf at this point. We will continue to monitor these disturbances and any other waves that emerge off Africa as we move deeper into the heart of hurricane season. The climatological peak of hurricane season happens in mid-September.
TROPICS: GULF & CARIBBEAN REMAIN QUIET… No tropical storms are expected to develop this week in the Gulf or Caribbean Sea.
