MOSTLY SUNNY & HUMID TODAY; ONLY A FEW POP-UP STORMS… Mostly sunny, hot, and humid conditions will continue across south Alabama and northwest Florida on this Tuesday. High temperatures will range from the upper 80s at the Alabama and northwest Florida beaches to the mid 90s farther inland, especially closer to US84. Heat index values will be in the 100-108° range this afternoon because of dewpoints in the mid 70s. Only isolated, summertime pop-up showers and thunderstorms are expected today, mainly near the coast where the seabreeze can provide a bit of lift for storms to develop. Rain chances are in the 10-20% range near the coast and closer to 30% inland, meaning MOST communities will remain dry today. Any storm that does manage to develop could produce a quick downpour, gusty winds, loud thunder, and cloud-to-ground lightning, but widespread severe weather is not expected. Tonight will be muggy with lows mostly in the mid 70s.
SIMILAR PATTERN WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY; HEAT CONTINUES TO BUILD… The overall pattern does not change much through the end of the work week as the ridge of high pressure aloft remains in control. Isolated to widely scattered storms will remain possible each day, with rain coverage generally confined to the 10-30% range. Most of the storms will happen in the P.M. hours each day. High temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday will be in the low to mid 90s. By Friday, stronger ridging begins to build in, allowing temps to tick up a bit more with mid to perhaps upper 90s possible in some inland spots. Humidity values will remain high, meaning heat index values will be well into the triple digits each afternoon. There are no formal heat alerts in effect today, but the trend favors increasingly dangerous heat later this week if the ridge strengthens as expected.
HOTTER & DRIER THIS WEEKEND INTO MONDAY… We’re seeing signs in model guidance of a hotter, drier pattern. That signal really starts to show up Saturday through Monday as the upper ridge strengthens over the region. Rain chances drop into the 0-10% chance range with most communities staying dry each day, although a few widely spaced showers and storms will continue to be possible in the afternoon and evening hours. High temperatures this weekend and into Monday are expected to be in the mid to upper 90s for many inland communities, with upper 80s to around 90° at the beaches. Heat index values in the 107-114° range will be possible into the upcoming weekend. A Heat Advisory or Excessive Heat Warning may be needed.
TROPICAL UPDATE… The National Hurricane Center is monitoring three separate tropical disturbances over the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. One disturbance in the central tropical Atlantic has a higher, 60% chance of development over the next 7 days. A second tropical wave in the Atlantic Ocean (located about halfway between the Lesser Antilles and the west coast of Africa) has a lower, 10% chance of development over the next week, and a third disturbance in the western subtropical Atlantic (northeast of Bermuda) also has a 10% chance of forming over the next 7 days. All of these systems are well away from the Gulf. There is no indication of any direct local, tropical impacts for south Alabama or northwest Florida in the foreseeable future. We are now moving deeper into hurricane season, and an uptick in activity like this is totally normal. For now, just a few things to monitor.
