SPOTTY STORMS TODAY, TOMORROW, AND SUNDAY… Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible across south Alabama and northwest Florida today. Rain will not be continuous, but some communities may have more than one round of storms. Localized downpours, frequent lightning, loud thunder, and gusty winds will be the main concerns. Just like what happened yesterday, nuisance-type flooding could develop in isolated spots where storms repeatedly move over the same area. Organized severe weather is not expected. High temperatures will be in the 86-93° range with heat index values as high as 102°.
Rain chances will decrease somewhat tomorrow, although scattered pop-up storms will remain possible. Spotty storms will again develop on Sunday, with many communities remaining dry for much of the weekend.
VERY NORMAL WEATHER PATTERN FOR LATE AUGUST THIS WEEKEND… The upper-level trough supporting our elevated rain chances will begin lifting northeastward this weekend as a ridge of high pressure builds in from the west. That will bring slightly lower storm coverage for Saturday and Sunday. Most storms will be daytime pop-up storms that are difficult to pinpoint in advance. High temperatures will generally be in the upper 80s to low 90s tomorrow and Sunday. Overnight lows will be in the 70s.
SCATTERED P.M. STORMS NEXT WEEK… Scattered, mainly afternoon showers and thunderstorms will remain possible Monday through Wednesday. Rain chances will gradually trend lower toward the middle and latter part of the week as a ridge of high pressure begins to exert more control over our local weather pattern. Temperatures will also climb a bit, with highs reaching the mid 90s by midweek. Increasing humidity will make it feel even hotter during the afternoon hours.
TROPICS: TROPICAL STORM DOLLY IN CENTRAL ATLANTIC… Advisories were initiated yesterday on Tropical Storm Dolly, located over the central tropical Atlantic Ocean well east of the Leeward Islands. The latest available advisory from the National Hurricane Center indicates maximum sustained winds near 40 mph as Dolly moves westward at 24 mph. Little change in strength is forecast before Dolly weakens into a tropical wave prior to reaching the Leeward Islands this weekend. Heavy rain could begin affecting the Leeward Islands late Saturday into Sunday, followed by the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Hispaniola Sunday and Monday. Flash flooding will be possible, particularly in areas of higher terrain.
I can only imagine this would be the scenario Dolly Parton would want – a “Dolly” that is expected to cause very little problems for the folks ahead of it. What an incredible life she lived!
TROPICS: GULF & CARIBBEAN QUIET… The National Hurricane Center is not currently highlighting any areas of potential tropical development in the Gulf or Caribbean Sea. Conditions remain quiet in both zones for now.
