FEW P.M. STORMS ON THIS HUMID THURSDAY; INCREASED RAIN CHANCES FRIDAY… Rain chances remain fairly low today with only a few spotty showers and storms expected. Many inland communities, especially farther north, will remain dry. Any storm that develops may produce a localized downpour, gusty winds, loud thunder, and cloud-to-ground lightning. There is no formal severe weather risk locally today. Tomorrow, rain chances will increase quite a bit. Hot and humid conditions will continue across south Alabama and northwest Florida throughout the day on this Thursday. High temperatures will be in the low to mid 90s today, with the hottest inland communities reaching the upper 90s. Heat index values may be as high as 105°.
SCATTERED TO NUMEROUS POP-UP STORMS ON FRIDAY… Rain and thunderstorm coverage will increase substantially tomorrow as deeper moisture moves into the region from the east. Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours. Rain will not be continuous, but considerably more communities will have rain tomorrow compared to what happens today. A few storms could become strong with locally strong wind gusts and intense rainfall. Isolated nuisance-type flooding may happen where heavy rain persists. There is no formal severe weather risk in place for Friday, but cloud-to-ground lightning will be a concern. High temperatures will be in the low 90s tomorrow.
POP-UP, MOSTLY P.M. STORMS INTO THE WEEKEND… Scattered pop-up showers and thunderstorms will continue to be possible Saturday and Sunday, with most of the storms developing during the afternoon and evening hours. It will not rain all day in any one community, and there will be plenty of dry periods and sunshine between the storms. High temperatures will remain in the low 90s this weekend.
NO CHANGES TO FORECAST INTO NEXT WEEK: P.M. STORMS, HEAT, HUMIDITY… Our hot, humid pattern with daily chances of mostly P.M. showers and thunderstorms will continue Monday through Wednesday. Rain coverage will vary somewhat from day to day, but no major change in the overall forecast pattern is expected. High temperatures will generally be in the low to mid 90s. Potentially dangerous heat index values will remain a concern, and heat advisories may become necessary for portions of the region into early next week.
TROPICS: ATLANTIC BASIN QUIET… Other than Tropical Depression Edouard, which is inland and weakening over southeastern Texas, the National Hurricane Center is not highlighting any additional disturbances across the Atlantic Basin. Tropical development is not expected during the next 5-7 days across the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, or the Gulf. This quiet outlook is especially welcome as the climatological peak of hurricane season occurs in just a few days on September 11.
