HEAT, HUMIDITY, & P.M. SPOTTY STORMS TODAY; COOLER, DRIER AIR THIS WEEKEND… Hot and humid conditions will continue across south Alabama and northwest Florida today, with spotty showers and thunderstorms developing during the afternoon and evening hours. High temperatures will be in the low to mid 90s. A drier airmass will begin moving into the region later this week, bringing lower rain chances, lower humidity, and cooler temperatures by Friday into the weekend.
SCATTERED STORMS LIKELY TO POP UP THIS AFTERNOON INTO THIS EVENING… Scattered, pop-up showers and thunderstorms are expected this afternoon into this evening. Many communities will remain dry, but a few storms may become strong enough to produce gusty winds. Widespread severe weather is not expected. South Alabama and northwest Florida are not included in a formal severe weather risk today.
LOW-END SEVERE WEATHER RISK TO OUR NORTH… The Storm Prediction Center has included portions of west-central Mississippi, much of north-central Alabama, and northern Georgia in a low-end, Level 1 (out of 5) severe weather risk zone valid for later today into this evening. Gusty winds capable of knocking down trees are the main concern. This low-end risk includes places like Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Gadsden, Anniston, Lake Martin, Clanton, Ft. Payne, Cullman, Jasper, Roanoke, and Aliceville in Alabama.
QUITE HOT & HUMID TODAY; HEAT INDEX VALUES IN EXCESS OF 100°… High temperatures will be in the low to mid 90s today. Plenty of humidity will make it feel hotter, with heat index values reaching around 103° in the hottest communities this afternoon. Similar hot conditions will continue tomorrow before temperatures begin trending lower Thursday and Friday.
MAINLY DRY TOMORROW, THURSDAY, AND FRIDAY; COOLER AIR THIS WEEKEND… Rain chances will decrease sharply tomorrow as drier air begins filtering into the region. Most communities will be dry Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, although a highly isolated shower or storm cannot be completely ruled out on Wednesday. Highs will be in the 91-94° range tomorrow, near 90 degrees on Thursday, and mid 80s on Friday. Many inland communities will dip into the low to mid 60s late Friday night into Saturday morning. Rain chances will remain very low through the weekend.
TROPICS: TROPICAL STORM FAY WEAKENING IN EASTERN ATLANTIC… Tropical Storm Fay remains over the eastern Atlantic, about 450 miles southwest of the Azores. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to 50 mph, and continued weakening is forecast. Fay could become a post-tropical remnant low within the next couple of days. No hazards affecting land are expected. No direct impacts are expected because of Tropical Storm Fay to the United States.
TROPICS: TROPICAL WAVE OVER WEST AFRICA… Separately from Tropical Storm Fay, a tropical wave is forecast to emerge from western Africa by tomorrow. Development should be slow, if it happens at all, near the Cabo Verde Islands later this week. The National Hurricane Center indicates a 20% chance of development over the next 7 days.
TROPICS: GULF & CARIBBEAN REMAIN QUIET… The current National Hurricane Center outlook does not identify any areas of concern in the Gulf or Caribbean Sea right now. The Gulf and Caribbean are expected to remain quiet for the next 5-7 days.
