VERY COLD TEMPS & WIND CHILL VALUES NEXT WEEK; 6 STRAIGHT SUBFREEZING NIGHTS EXPECTED… Very cold temperatures are coming to south Alabama and northwest Florida next week after the passage of a cold front early Monday morning. That same cold front will bring with it a chance of strong thunderstorms to our area late Sunday night into early Monday morning. The map attached highlights the projected wind chill values at 6AM on Tuesday, January 7, 2025. Air temperatures won’t be far from these numbers. High temperatures on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are only projected to be in the 40s each day.

MILD TEMPS TOMORROW AND SUNDAY… This weekend will be the time to get ready for the prolonged (by our local standards, anyway) cold snap. Highs will be near the 60 degree mark on Saturday and closer to 70° on Sunday. This will provide plenty of opportunity for us to wrap pipes, bring in outdoor plants that may not have already been inside, and get a place ready inside for pets that are currently outside. Air temperatures will be in the low 20s by the time we get to Wednesday morning.

ROUND OF STORMS ON SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY… The overall severe weather risk on Sunday will maximize to our west. I am expecting a line of thunderstorms to move into west Alabama probably after midnight on Sunday night into early Monday morning. This line of storms is expected to be weakening, but it still may be strong enough to produce a few areas of damaging wind gusts and maybe even a tornado or two. Widespread, significant severe weather is not expected locally. I will have another update about this posted tomorrow (Saturday).

RAIN & STORMS POSSIBLE SUNDAY NIGHT… Spotty showers will become possible on Sunday ahead of a few thunderstorms becoming possible overnight Sunday into Monday.

Also watching the potential for mixed precipitation toward the end of next week. Nothing set in stone just yet, but watching trends carefully.

NICE FRIDAY; STORMS SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY; RAIN/WINTRY MIX/SNOW CHANCES NEXT WEEK… Sunshine is the story on this Friday across south Alabama and northwest Florida with high temperatures quite similar to yesterday with most spots reaching the upper 50s inland with temperatures near 60 near the beaches and bays. Many communities will have overnight lows at or just below the freezing mark by 6AM Saturday, particularly locales further inland. We have multiple weather systems set to bring potential impacts to our local area over the next 7-9 days. The first system will move by Sunday night into Monday when scattered storms will be possible. Winter weather impacts, including the potential for freezing rain, will be possible on Thursday of the upcoming week.

SHOWERS ON SUNDAY; STORMS POSSIBLE SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY… Dry conditions are expected today and tomorrow ahead of showers becoming possible during the daytime hours of Sunday. The Storm Prediction Center continues to include much of Louisiana, Mississippi, east Texas, and now west Alabama in their Level 2 (out of 5) severe weather risk valid for Sunday into early Monday. Our local area is likely to be included in a lower-end, Level 1 (out of 5) severe weather risk zone for Sunday night into Monday morning. I expect the main concern in any thunderstorms that become strong or marginally severe locally to be damaging wind gusts. The overall tornado risk is low, but not entirely zero. I will have updates posted throughout the weekend in the RedZone Weather app.

QUITE COLD NEXT WEEK… We have a sustained, very cold few days upcoming as we get into next week. High temperatures on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday will be in the 40s with overnight lows in the low to mid 20s. Temperatures in the hard freeze range are expected Wednesday morning and Thursday morning. NOW is time to do any preparation ahead of this extended period of cold weather coming next week.

UNCERTAINTY SURROUNDING RAIN/MIX/SNOW POTENTIAL THURSDAY… After the dry, very cold days set to happen on Tuesday and Wednesday across the local area, we will be tracking a developing area of low pressure to our west or southwest. The exact future track of this area of low pressure will determine a LOT as to who gets snow, who gets mixed precipitation, and who gets a cold, miserable rain. It remains entirely too early to ascertain where the lines for precipitation determination will set up. There is a real chance our area simply has a cold rain at times on Thursday. There also is a chance for mixed precipitation along with some snow flakes. The overall probability of ALL snow looks quite low, unfortunately for snow lovers.
