SLIGHT INCREASE IN POP-UP STORM COVERAGE TODAY; HIGHER RAIN CHANCES THIS WEEKEND… Showers and thunderstorms will likely increase in coverage a bit today compared to the last few days. Not every community will have rain before the end of the day. Any storms that develop will be capable of producing localized downpours, loud thunder, and cloud-to-ground lightning. Widespread severe thunderstorms are not expected but some of the strongest storms may be capable of producing brief gusty winds. High temperatures will be in the low to mid 90s today with heat index values in the 100-105° range.
SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS LIKELY AT TIMES THIS WEEKEND… Scattered showers and thunderstorms will increase in coverage across south Alabama and northwest Florida on Saturday and Sunday. Most (not all) of the showers and storms will happen in the afternoon and evening hours. Widespread severe storms are not expected, but all of the storms will be capable of producing localized downpours of heavy rain, cloud-to-ground lightning, and loud thunder. Rain amounts are expected to be in the 1-2″ range (in total) across most communities locally. I will have radar updates posted this weekend, as needed, in the RedZone Weather app.
TROPICS: ATLANTIC BASIN REMAINS QUIET… No tropical storms are expected to form over the next 5-7 days across the Gulf, Caribbean Sea, or Atlantic Ocean. The climatological peak of the Atlantic Hurricane Season happens in mid-September. Hurricane season officially ends on November 30.
