SCATTERED STORMS THIS EVENING; AMPLE HEAT & HUMIDITY CONTINUE… High temperatures will be in the 95-101° range across much of south Alabama and northwest Florida today. Humidity will make those temperatures feel more like 105-112° this afternoon. A Heat Advisory is in effect today for all 12 counties in the RedZone Weather coverage area. Take it easy if you’ll be working outside for an extended period of time today. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop this afternoon into this evening, with the greatest rain chances happening in Mobile, Baldwin, Escambia (AL), Covington, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, and Escambia (FL) counties. It won’t rain all day and not every community will have rain, but pop-up storms will develop quickly in some communities this evening. The strongest storms may produce gusty winds, heavy downpours, loud thunder, and cloud-to-ground lightning.

EXCESSIVE HEAT AND HUMIDITY TO CONTINUE THRU MIDWEEK… An upper-level ridge of high pressure will continue to be the main driver of our weather pattern through midweek. High temperatures tomorrow will be in the mid to upper 90s across much of the region, with many inland communities again reaching the upper 90s or near 100°. Wednesday will also be quite hot, with highs reaching the 90s and potentially near 100° in the hottest inland spots. Overnight relief will be limited as lows tonight range from the low 70s in a few inland communities to the low 80s closer to the coast. Heat remains the main weather concern through midweek.

P.M. POP-UP STORMS POSSIBLE EACH DAY THIS WEEK… The seabreeze and leftover outflow boundaries from previous storms will help spark scattered showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours each day this week. Tuesday may feature slightly more storms in some communities, while lower-end rain chances are expected Wednesday and Thursday. Storm coverage is projected to increase somewhat Friday and Saturday as the upper ridge begins to weaken and a trough approaches the region. High temperatures will remain well into the 90s through much of the week before a modest cooling trend becomes possible by the weekend.

TROPICS: ATLANTIC BASIN QUIET… The National Hurricane Center indicates tropical development is not expected anywhere in the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, or Gulf over the next 5-7 days. The two tropical waves we were tracking in the central Atlantic Ocean faded away due to dry air and atmospheric shear.

TROPICS: LALA PASSES HAWAII AS A HURRICANE… Lala, now a tropical storm just west of Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean, continues to move westward. The system was a category 1 hurricane when it made its closest approach to the Big Island of Hawaii on Saturday night. While a landfall technically didn’t occur due to the center of the storm remaining just southwest of the Big Island of Hawaii, the eyewall of the storm brought significant damage to portions of Hawaii, including multiple homes that were swept away in floodwaters.
