STRONG STORMS W/ GUSTY WINDS POSSIBLE THIS EVENING; FIRST DAY OF HURRICANE SEASON… Thunderstorms capable of producing gusty winds will be possible as we get into the evening hours on this Monday. The current expectation is that a complex of thunderstorms will develop across the Tennessee Valley region of north Alabama and gradually move south across the state throughout the day. This complex of storms will be capable of producing damaging wind gusts along the leading edge. These storms will likely arrive in south Alabama and northwest Florida this evening between 4PM and 8PM. Tornadoes are not going to be the norm, but the overall tornado risk may not be completely zero. We encourage everyone to have multiple ways to hear severe thunderstorm warnings this evening. High temperatures will be in the upper 80s and low 90s today. Another, separate round of scattered strong storms may happen tomorrow ahead of lower rain chances coming later this week.
SEVERE WEATHER TIMING – TODAY… The latest forecast guidance continues to support the potential for a complex of storms (a mesoscale convective system or MCS) to move from north to south across Alabama this afternoon into this evening. 4PM to 8PM is the main four hour window for strong to severe thunderstorms to happen across south Alabama and northwest Florida. Damaging wind gusts and hail up to quarter size are the main concerns in the strongest of the storms. The overall tornado risk remains very low, but perhaps not entirely zero.
SCATTERED STRONG STORMS ON TUESDAY… Tomorrow is expected to feature pop-up thunderstorms, similar to previous days. Not every community will have rain before the end of the day. Unlike previous days, however, some of the thunderstorms may be strong at times on Tuesday. Gusty winds and hail will be the main concern in any storms that become stronger.
LOWER RAIN CHANCES LATER IN THE WEEK… Slightly cooler, drier air will be in place across south Alabama and northwest Florida on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Rain chances will be a bit lower than the last couple of weeks. Most communities will probably remain dry during that three day period. High temperatures will be in the low to mid 80s with lows in the low to mid 60s.
2026 ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASON STARTS TODAY… The 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season officially begins today. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released their annual hurricane season forecast about 10 days ago. NOAA is projecting a below normal hurricane season due to the expectation of El Niño developing. The agency is calling for 8-14 named storms, 3-6 hurricanes, and 1-3 major hurricanes across the Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf.
