RAIN & THUNDERSTORMS INCREASE IN COVERAGE TODAY; WET PATTERN AHEAD… Scattered showers and thunderstorms will increase in coverage across south Alabama and northwest Florida on this Monday. The greatest rain chances today will happen across parts of west Alabama, but compared to previous days, rain chances will be a bit higher all across the region. I am not expecting widespread severe weather today, but all of the thunderstorms that develop will be capable of producing cloud-to-ground lightning, loud thunder, and heavy rain at times. It won’t rain all day by any stretch. This means if you’re visiting our area this week, there is no reason to cancel your plans. Pop-up, summer storms are so typical this time of year. Even higher rain chances are expected tomorrow into Wednesday as deep, tropical moisture moves across the local area.
MAIN CONCERN IN DAYS AHEAD: LIGHTNING & FLASH FLOODING; LOW-END TORNADO RISK POSSIBLE MIDWEEK… Rain chances will remain high through Wednesday across the local area. The overall tornado risk and risk of severe storms remains very, very low today. Tomorrow, gusty winds may be possible in the strongest of the storms. We may have a low-end, conditional tornado risk around midweek in some parts of the local area. I am more concerned about the potential for cloud-to-ground lightning and flash flooding, particularly if storms train over the same areas. I expect the overall risk of flash flooding to increase Wednesday into Thursday as by that point, quite a bit of rain will have happened across the region. This is something I will be closely monitoring in the days ahead.
SPOTTY STORMS LIKELY INTO THE WEEKEND… Rain chances will remain elevated into the upcoming weekend with scattered showers and thunderstorms being likely Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The highest chances of rain will happen in the afternoon and evening hours each day.
TROPICS: LOW-END CHANCE OF BRIEF TROPICAL STORM IN WESTERN GULF… The National Hurricane Center continues to flag an area of low pressure situated over northeastern Mexico and south Texas with low-end probabilities for brief development into a named tropical storm. IF development were to happen, the expectation is the system would develop into a named storm in the western Gulf right before landfall in east Texas or western Louisiana. Quite frankly, the system remains unimpressive in terms of central organization. This means that it will be a rainmaker and probably not much else. Higher rain chances are expected across much of the Deep South due to this system tomorrow into Wednesday.
TROPICS: CARIBBEAN & ATLANTIC REMAIN QUIET, FOR NOW… The Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean remain quiet with no tropical storms expected to form over the next 5-7 days. The climatological peak of hurricane season happens on September 11. Hurricane season officially ends on November 30.
