TEMPERATURES TO CRASH AFTER COLD FRONT PASSAGE MONDAY MORNING; AIR TEMPS IN 30s IN AFTERNOON… Air temperatures are set to “go the wrong way” all day on Monday after the passage of a cold front early tomorrow morning. Temperatures around midnight tonight will be in the 60s. By 9AM, temperatures will be in the 40s after a cold front moves through most places across the region. We’ll be in the 30s by tomorrow afternoon with wind chill values in the 20s (!) by 3PM. Air temperatures will drop below the freezing mark by 8-9PM tomorrow evening. We will be in the low to mid 20s by Tuesday morning with highs only in the mid 40s Tuesday afternoon. NOW is the time to complete any “cold weather preparation” ahead of the bitterly cold air set to arrive tomorrow.

The map attached highlights the projected wind chill values (how the air actually feels with temperature and wind speed) at 4PM Monday afternoon. It is certainly not common at all for our local area to have wind chill values near 20 degrees in the afternoon hours.

TORNADO WATCH TO OUR WEST THIS AFTERNOON… A Tornado Watch is in effect until 9PM for many counties in parts of east Texas, southern Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi this afternoon as a line of storms sets up and moves east. There have been a few discrete storms out ahead of the main line that have produced tornado warnings in the last hour. The Tornado Watch is in effect for Jackson (MS), Vicksburg (MS), Amory (MS), Oxford (MS), Greenville (MS), Brookhaven (MS), Dumas (AR), Monticello (AR), Monroe (LA), Natchitoches (LA), Alexandria (LA), Baton Rouge (LA), Jasper (TX), and surrounding areas.

LOW-END SEVERE WEATHER RISK OVERNIGHT INTO EARLY MONDAY LOCALLY… All of southwest Alabama and northwest Florida continues to be involved in the low-end, Level 1 (out of 5) severe weather risk zone valid for tonight into early Monday morning. Storms will probably be weakening while moving across our region, but there may be just enough overlap for one or two storms to briefly be strong or marginally severe. Gusty winds continue to be the main concern. The overall tornado risk overnight into Monday continues to be quite low, but perhaps not entirely zero. Have a way to hear warnings overnight.

SPOTTY SHOWERS & STORMS TODAY; LOW-END RISK OVERNIGHT… Scattered showers and perhaps a few thunderstorms will be possible on this Sunday across south Alabama and northwest Florida ahead of a low-end risk of a few severe storms overnight into early Monday morning.

LOW-END SEVERE WEATHER RISK SUNDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY MONDAY; SCATTERED STORMS LIKELY… Showers and thunderstorms become likely on Sunday night into early Monday across south Alabama and northwest Florida as a strong cold front approaches from our northwest. This cold front will usher in very cold air on Monday that will last all week. There is a chance a few of the thunderstorms could briefly become strong or marginally severe. Gusty winds will be the main concern. The overall tornado risk locally remains quite low, but not entirely zero. We encourage everyone to have a way to hear warnings overnight tomorrow into early Monday, just in case a tornado warning becomes required for your specific location. Most spots will simply have rain and thunder at times.

SEVERE WEATHER TIMING – SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY… 10PM to 6AM is the main eight hour window when strong to severe thunderstorms will become possible across southwest Alabama and northwest Florida. Quite frankly, I am not expecting MANY tornado warnings in our local area due to this event like what happened a week ago. There is always a chance of an event over performing expectations and producing more warnings than expected, but I would suggest the probability of that with this particular event is fairly low. Not zero, but low. Regardless, have a way to hear warnings just in case your specific location goes under a warning. I will be posting updates, as needed, throughout the night tomorrow night in the RedZone Weather app.

SHOWERS AND A FEW STORMS AT TIMES ON SUNDAY… Scattered showers and thunderstorms will gradually increase in coverage throughout the day on Sunday. While I am not expecting tomorrow to be an “all day washout,” we will have scattered showers and thunderstorms around at times ahead of the main severe weather risk tomorrow night into early Monday morning.

HIGHER, LEVEL 3 (OUT OF 5) RISK ON SUNDAY TO OUR WEST… Parts of northeast Louisiana, southwest Arkansas, and western Mississippi are involved with the Level 3 (out of 5) severe weather risk valid for Sunday. This risk will materialize during the daytime hours of Sunday for places like Jackson (MS), Vicksburg (MS), Monroe (LA), and surrounding areas. Surrounding this Level 3 risk, we have a sizable Level 2 (out of 5) risk in place for much of Mississippi, Louisiana, far eastern Texas, and southwest Arkansas. This includes places like Meridian (MS), Hattiesburg (MS), Slidell (LA), Shreveport (LA), Little Rock (AR), Oxford (MS), Starkville (MS), Columbus (MS), and surrounding areas. The western half of Alabama and northwest Florida are involved in the low-end, Level 1 (out of 5) severe weather risk where conditions are much more questionable as to if any severe storms will happen.

VERY COLD AIR ARRIVES BEHIND THE STORMS… Thunderstorms will move through late Sunday night into early Monday morning ahead of a sharply colder air mass moving into our region. High temperatures on Monday may very well only be in the 40s in many spots across west Alabama. Overnight lows will be below freezing in many spots across the region for 5-6 consecutive nights next week.
