P.M. POP-UP STORMS TODAY; HEAT & HUMIDITY CONTINUE… Scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop across parts of south Alabama and northwest Florida this afternoon into the evening hours. It won’t rain all day, and not every community will have rain before the end of the day. Widespread severe weather is not expected. Storms that develop may produce localized downpours, cloud-to-ground lightning, loud thunder, and gusty winds. High temperatures will be in the 93-100° range with heat index values as high as 112° in some communities. While temperatures will moderate lower to some degree in the days ahead, hot, humid conditions will persist into the weekend and early next week.
MORE P.M. STORMS TOMORROW & FRIDAY… The overall pattern will remain largely unchanged tomorrow and Friday. The seabreeze and leftover outflow boundaries will help spark isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening hours. Any stronger storms may produce heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds. High temperatures will be in the mid to upper 90s on both Thursday and Friday.
SLIGHTLY LOWER RAIN CHANCES THIS WEEKEND… Rain chances will begin trending lower Saturday, with even fewer pop-up storms expected Sunday. Most communities will remain dry this weekend, although a few isolated showers or thunderstorms cannot be completely ruled out. High temperatures will continue to be in the mid 90s with heat index values in excess of 100° in many spots.
HOT TEMPERATURES TO PERSIST IN THE DAYS AHEAD… An upper ridge of high pressure will keep hot, humid conditions in place through the end of the week. Slightly lower temperatures may become possible this weekend as the ridge weakens, but highs will remain in the 90s each day through early next week. With excessive heat index values possible over the next couple of days, stay hydrated, take breaks in air conditioning when possible, and monitor for signs of heat illness.
TROPICS REMAIN QUIET… The National Hurricane Center indicates tropical development is not expected anywhere across the Gulf, Caribbean Sea, or Atlantic Ocean during the next 7 days. No active named storms or disturbances are currently being highlighted across the Atlantic Basin. The climatological peak of hurricane season happens in mid-September.
