SCATTERED STORMS LIKELY TODAY; A FEW STRONG STORMS POSSIBLE OVER WEST ALABAMA… Spotty showers and thunderstorms will be possible on this Friday across south Alabama and northwest Florida. Parts of west Alabama are involved in a low-end, Level 1 (out of 5) severe weather risk today, driven by a chance of brief tornadoes in the strongest of the storms. Storms will be most numerous in areas along and west of Interstate 65, however, a few storms may happen closer to the coast this afternoon into this evening. I will be posting radar updates this afternoon into the evening hours, as needed, in the RedZone Weather app. Scattered thunderstorms will be possible in each of the next 7 days, including on Memorial Day Monday.

SEVERE WEATHER TIMING – TODAY… Today will be a low-end severe weather risk day, mainly across west Alabama. Now through 4PM is the main window for any severe storms today. To be clear, most communities will simply have rain and thunder at times. Some communities, particularly in northwest Florida, won’t get much rain at all most likely as storms are expected to be spotty in nature.

POP-UP STORMS ON SATURDAY… I expect Saturday to be a more traditional summertime pattern across the local area with pop-up thunderstorms being the norm. I have had so many questions over the last few days from folks worried about their weekend plans for the Memorial Day holiday weekend. I do NOT suggest cancelling plans at this point. The fact is, it is so typical for our region to have occasional pop-up thunderstorms in the early summer months. This is totally normal for this time of year. There inevitably will be some sunshine each day. Widespread, significant severe storms are not in the forecast over the next 7 days locally. Loud storms that produce heavy rain may be possible in some locales, but big time tornadoes are not expected.

SPOTTY STORMS ON SUNDAY AND INTO MEMORIAL DAY MONDAY… Scattered thunderstorms, mostly in the P.M. hours, will happen on Sunday and into the Memorial Day holiday on Monday. It will not rain all day in any given locale. Afternoon high temperatures will be in the low to mid 80s each day with morning lows in the upper 60s and near 70°. I will have radar updates posted throughout the weekend in the RedZone Weather app.

UNSETTLED PATTERN INTO NEXT WEEK; POP-UP STORMS EACH DAY… Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible in each of the next 7 days across the local area. We probably will see an uptick in the overall coverage of showers and storms toward the middle part of the upcoming week. It is a fairly common occurrence in late May and early June for pop-up thunderstorms to happen each day, mostly during the diurnal heating period, aka in the afternoon and evening hours. High temperatures will be in the 80s next week with lows in the 60s.
