SPOTTY STORMS TODAY; TRENDING DRIER THIS WEEKEND… Showers and thunderstorms will pop up at times later this morning and into the afternoon hours ahead of an increase in coverage of storms later today. An organized group of storms, known as a mesoscale convective system (MCS) could move into west Alabama from east Mississippi this evening between 4PM and 8PM. This group of thunderstorms could move into parts of south-central Alabama and/or northwest Florida this evening, although the system may be weakening by that point and may not make it that far east. Widespread severe weather is not expected but some of the storms will likely be loud at times, producing quite a bit of lightning and loud thunder. I will be monitoring radar trends throughout the day and posting updates in the RedZone Weather app. High temperatures will be near the 90 degree mark in most communities across the region today.
SCATTERED STORMS POSSIBLE THURSDAY AND FRIDAY… P.M. pop-up thunderstorms will be possible tomorrow (Thursday) and again on Friday. I expect the overall coverage of rain and thunderstorms tomorrow and Friday to be less compared to previous days. Widespread severe storms are not expected tomorrow or on Friday. High temperatures will be in the low 90s with morning lows in the low 70s.
DRIER & HOTTER THIS WEEKEND… Rain chances will be lower this weekend with only about a 1 in 10 chance of spotty showers and thunderstorms. Most communities will be dry and hot. High temperatures will be in the 90-95° range this weekend across south Alabama and northwest Florida.
QUITE HOT NEXT WEEK… Building heat will be the weather headline as we get into next week. High temperatures will be in the mid 90s by Monday and Tuesday with index values in the 103-108° range. Isolated thunderstorms will be possible in the afternoon and evening hours next week. It is a bit too early to determine exactly what will happen on Independence Day on Friday in specific communities, but overall, I expect hot and humid conditions with a chance of spotty, P.M. storms.
TROPICS: QUIET FOR NOW… The Gulf, Caribbean Sea, and Atlantic Ocean remain quiet with no tropical storms expected to form over the next 5-7 days. The climatological peak of hurricane season happens on September 11.
