SEVERE WEATHER RISK LESSENS… Rain continues to fall across much of Alabama and northwest Florida on this Saturday evening. The air is simply too stable and cold for thunderstorms to organize in most spots across the region. Because of this, we can now confidently say that severe weather is highly unlikely. The atmosphere is so stable that it will be difficult for this mass of rain to produce thunder and lightning north of Interstate 10. There could be a few thunderstorms south of I-10 over the next few hours. Widespread severe weather is NOT expected. The Storm Prediction Center has trimmed all local land areas OUT of the low-end, Level 1 (out of 5) marginal severe weather risk. Here’s a view of the radar as of early evening showing extensive rainfall happening across the region…
COLD AIR IN PLACE… Unfortunately, it’s a miserable day across the region with temperatures in the 40s and 50s across most areas. We have a steep thermal gradient in place with beach locales like Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Perdido Key being in the 60s. Areas just to the north of there like Robertsdale and Silverhill are in the 50s with 40s on the board just to the north in places like Bay Minette and Atmore. This cold air will act to mitigate our severe weather risk today. Good news! Here’s a quick check of temperatures…
NEXT FEW HOURS… RAIN is the word – a cold, miserable rain. Showers should begin to exit our area to the east after 9PM this evening. There still could be scattered showers around on Sunday morning, but most of the rain should be long gone at that point.
I’ll continue to monitor radar trends over the next few hours, but at this point, it’s reasonable to conclude that severe weather likely will not happen.
