SHOWERS POSSIBLE LATER THIS EVENING… Isolated rain showers are possible later today into this evening before rain chances rise on Friday. Mostly cloudy skies are expected today with temperatures peaking in the upper-60s this afternoon. Another round of rain will happen late Saturday evening ahead of significantly colder air moving into the region early Sunday morning. This will be the coldest snap we’ve had so far during this winter season with overnight lows plunging into the 20s by Monday morning. Let’s talk details…
DRY FOR MUCH OF TODAY… Most of the region will be dry throughout the day as temperatures warm into the 60s. Showers will become possible over west Alabama as early as midafternoon, but vast majority of us should remain dry through early evening.
RAIN POSSIBLE FRIDAY… Scattered rain showers are likely on Friday as a warm, southerly flow off the Gulf of Mexico ushers in ample moisture into the atmosphere over our region. Temperatures on Friday will surge into the 70s in the afternoon hours.
FEW STORMS ON SATURDAY EVENING… There is a chance that we could have thunderstorms around on Saturday evening as a mass of rain moves through. Atmospheric instability (aka CAPE or convective available potential energy) values will be minimal, but not zero on Saturday as a line of showers and storms moves by. This means that while thunder and lightning will be somewhat of a concern, severe weather remains UNLIKELY as of now. We continue to monitor this very low-end risk of severe weather and will keep you posted with any changes in the RedZone Weather app.
COLDER AIR ON THE WAY… After the passage of a cold front late Saturday night into early Sunday morning, cold air will pummel into our region from the northwest. Temperatures will steadily decrease from late Saturday night all the way to Monday morning. Temperatures will “go the wrong way” all day on Sunday, starting in the 50s around 6AM and ending up in the 30s by the evening hours. With a strong north wind factored in, wind chill values Sunday afternoon and evening will be in the 30s. Very cold conditions ahead of the hard freeze on Sunday night into Monday.
QUITE COLD MONDAY MORNING… Most spots across the interior of south Alabama and northwest Florida will be in the 20s by 6AM on Monday. Model trends have been “warmer” over the last few runs, and there is a growing chance that we will have to modify our 7 Day Forecast somewhat to account for this. Instead of the low-20s, it looks like most of our region will be in the mid- or even upper-20s by Monday morning. Most models also suggest much warmer conditions for Monday with a high temperature in the upper-40s. We drop below freezing again Monday night into Tuesday before a warming trend commences during the daytime hours of Tuesday.
