TORNADO RISK INCREASES FOR SUNDAY; LEVEL 3 RISK…… The Storm Prediction Center has just upgraded much of south Alabama into their Level 3 “enhanced risk” zone valid for Sunday, meaning numerous severe storms will be possible. The risk of strong tornadoes has increased due to the higher potential for supercell thunderstorms out ahead of the squall line that is forecast to move through on Sunday.
LOCAL AREA – HIGHEST RISK… For our part of south Alabama, the highest risk of severe thunderstorms will likely happen across Escambia (AL), Monroe, Conecuh, Covington, and Crenshaw counties. The rest of the local area remains involved in the Level 2 “slight” risk. Brewton, Atmore, Monroeville, Evergreen, Greenville, Georgiana, McKenzie, Andalusia, Opp, Carolina, River Falls, Florala, Geneva, Troy, Luverne, Enterprise, Abbeville, Daleville, Eufaula are included in the higher, Level 3 risk zone.
TORNADO RISK INCREASING… The Storm Prediction Center notes in their latest discussion that the tornado risk across southern Alabama seems to be increasing slightly. Why? The parameters supporting a few discrete supercell thunderstorms have increased. These storms that can “get out ahead” of the main line of storms have the best chance to tap into Gulf moisture, instability, and shear to produce tornadoes. SPC notes that a few strong tornadoes will be possible.
APP ALERTS… Once you have our free RZW app downloaded to your phone or tablet, be sure to visit the Alerts tab and turn on the alerts you’d like to receive from me. If you like a LOT of alerts, be sure to turn on Low-Level Alerts. Most folks should turn ON the Medium-Level Alerts since we don’t send very many of those as they’re reserved for important bits of weather news.
I’ll have updates throughout the day in the RedZone Weather app. Let me know if you have specific questions.
