WARM, HUMID SUNDAY; STORMS TONIGHT INTO MONDAY… Severe weather is happening well to our west on this Sunday across parts of eastern Texas, Louisiana, and western Mississippi. That complex of showers and thunderstorms will approach west Alabama late this evening into the early part of Monday. There is a low-end severe weather risk in place for our entire region on Monday. Before the mess of showers and storms gets to our area, we’ve got a warm, humid Sunday evening ahead with very little in the way of rain. Lots of details to discuss… Let’s go!

TEMPS NEAR 80° TODAY; INCREASING CLOUDINESS… Most spots are approaching the 80 degree mark this afternoon across south Alabama and northwest Florida under partly cloudy skies. Vast majority of us will likely be dry through the end of the day, although there could be a few tiny showers later this evening across west Alabama. Winds will be out of the south at 5-10mph throughout the evening.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH POSSIBLE FOR NORTH ALABAMA… A Severe Thunderstorm Watch may be issued in the next 1-2 hours for the northwestern corner of Alabama (along and north of I-59). If you’re traveling to north Alabama today, be aware of the potential for a few strong storms capable of producing damaging winds and large hail.

LEVEL 3 SEVERE WEATHER RISK TO OUR WEST… The Storm Prediction Center has upgraded parts of Louisiana and eastern Texas into the Level 3 (out of 5) enhanced risk to potentially see a few severe storms capable of producing damaging winds and a few tornadoes this afternoon into this evening. At the time this video is being produced (1PM hour), we note several severe thunderstorm warnings are in effect for areas near Houston, TX. This is the same complex of storms that will approach our western counties late this evening into early Monday, although storms should considerably weaken after sunset.

WET MONDAY AHEAD; ISOLATED STRONG STORMS POSSIBLE… Showers and thunderstorms will be possible throughout the day on Monday as a cold front approaches from the west. The Storm Prediction Center has ALL of Alabama and northwest Florida involved in their low-end, Level 1 (out of 5) marginal severe weather risk zone Monday. This means that widespread severe weather is not expected, but there could be a brief stronger storm or two throughout the day. Rain chances will be greatest on Monday between 10AM and 5PM, although showers and storms could happen before or after that core timeframe. Temperatures on Monday will be surpressed due to all of the clouds around. Highs will peak in the mid-70s.

MAIN CONCERNS MONDAY: WIND & HAIL… The overall tornado risk on Monday will remain very low across our region as shear will be unidirectional, aka winds will be moving northeast at basically all low-levels of the atmosphere. Tornadoes generally need shear/helicity (when winds move at differing directions at different levels of the atmosphere) to form. Because of this, the main severe weather concern Monday will be the potential for damaging wind gusts in the stronger storms and the potential for hail up to the size of quarters. Most storms will be weaker than these qualifications, but if we do get a few storms that can ramp up, they could easily “go severe.” I’ll be monitoring radar trends carefully tomorrow and have the latest information for you in the RedZone Weather app.

LINGERING SHOWERS TUESDAY MORNING… Rain will start to clear out to the east on Tuesday morning. This means there may be a few lingering rain showers around before 10AM Tuesday. Clouds will become more scattered by Tuesday evening. High temperatures Tuesday rise into the upper-70s.

DRIER MIDWEEK; SHOWERS LATE THURSDAY… Wednesday likely will be sunny with high temperatures in the mid-80s. Clouds will increase, yet again, on Thursday with high temps in the low-80s. There could be a few showers and thunderstorms around by late Thursday evening. Models suggest this feature could bring rain in the overnight hours of Thursday into Friday. For now, severe weather parameters remain low. We’ll keep you posted in the RedZone Weather app as we get closer to this next rain chance.
