DAMAGING TORNADO AT GUNTERSVILLE… Breaking News just coming in from Marshall County. There has been a damaging tornado that moved through parts of Blount and Marshall counties in north Alabama just north of Birmingham. Blount County 911 reports on Twitter that there have been numerous reports of trees down. Unconfirmed reports of a mobile home overturned. All of this damage is likely because of a tornado that moved through areas near Snead, Susan Moore, and Guntersville.
RAIN & STORMS AT TIMES TODAY; ISOLATED STRONG STORMS POSSIBLE… We had one strong round of storms overnight that is now moving to the east and we’re monitoring developing cells this morning over west Alabama that are rapidly developing into thunderstorms. Have a way to check the radar and keep that rain gear handy today as we could have rain and thunderstorms at times throughout the day. The Storm Prediction Center continues to include ALL of south Alabama and northwest Florida in their Level 1 (out of 5) marginal severe weather risk zone for today. This means that a few stronger storms capable of producing gusty winds and hail will be possible. The overall tornado risk today remains low, but not quite zero. The greatest rain chance today will happen between 10AM and 5PM, although we note storms will be possible before and after that core timeframe. High temperatures on this Monday peak in the mid- to upper-70s. Drier, warmer days are ahead before another likely wet weekend. Let’s look at a few details…
MAIN CONCERNS TODAY: WIND & HAIL… Damaging wind gusts and large hail could happen in any storms that form today. While the overall tornado risk is LOW, it is not zero. This means that an isolated tornado or two will be possible. We’ve already had a supercell in north Alabama in Blount and Marshall counties produce confirmed damage due to what was likely a tornado.
LINGERING SHOWERS TUESDAY MORNING… Rain will start to clear out to the east tomorrow (Tuesday) morning. This means there may be a few lingering rain showers around before 10AM Tuesday. Clouds will become more scattered by Tuesday evening. High temperatures Tuesday rise into the upper-70s.
DRIER MIDWEEK; SHOWERS LATE THURSDAY… Wednesday likely will be sunny with high temperatures in the mid-80s. Clouds will increase, yet again, on Thursday with high temps in the low-80s. There could be a few showers and thunderstorms around by late Thursday evening. Models suggest this feature could bring rain in the overnight hours of Thursday into Friday. We’ll keep you posted in the RedZone Weather app as we get closer to this next rain chance.
SEVERE WEATHER POSSIBLE THIS WEEKEND… Early model indications along with the latest forecaster discussion from the Storm Prediction Center indicate that severe storms could happen during the upcoming weekend in response to a shortwave trough approaching our area on Sunday. It’s too early for specific details, but SPC notes that if model consistency continues, an early convective outlook upgrade may be needed over the next few days. As always, I’ll keep you posted. Nothing to stress over now, but it is somethig to be aware of as we continue through the heart of our primary severe weather season.
