TWO SMALL EARTHQUAKES CONFIRMED THIS AFTERNOON… The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has confirmed two earthquakes that happened earlier today. The larger earthquake was a magnitude 2.8 earthquake centered near Chavers Creek Road and Big Escambia Creek. This is the small earthquake that caused all of the ground shaking and rattling in communities like Pollard, Keego, Foshee, and Wolf Log this afternoon. This earthquake happened at 3:11PM CDT.
ANOTHER, SEPARATE EARTHQUAKE EARLIER TODAY… USGS also confirms a magnitude 2.5 earthquake happened today at 11:33AM CDT. This earthquake was centered not far at all from the larger one that happened this afternoon. The epicenter was centered near Old Foshee Road and Wolf Log Road on the western side of Big Escambia Creek. Both earthquakes were centered approximately 8-9 miles north-northeast of the downtown area of Flomaton, AL.
THIRD EARTHQUAKE TODAY IS NOT CONFIRMED… At least one news outlet is reporting that “3 earthquakes” have happened today, April 11, 2019. At the time of this writing (6:47PM), I cannot independently verify this. The U.S. Geological Survey is the official authority on earthquake tracking in the United States. So far, they’re only confirming the two quakes earlier today. If a third earthquake is confirmed, we will let you know in the RedZone Weather app. Otherwise, the official number stands at 2 earthquakes, and not 3, for today.
THANKS FOR YOUR REPORTS… As we’ve previously reported, the success of the USGS earthquake program in our area is because of YOUR reports. Thanks so much to everyone who reached out today reporting their ground shaking to me. I was able to talk to a geophysicist to get these earthquakes confirmed strictly because of your reports. Thanks again. Let me know if you feel ground shaking or if your house shakes as more small earthquakes are possible over the next few weeks.
SUNDAY SEVERE WEATHER RISK… I am in the process of devising the latest post about the risk of tornadoes and strong to severe storms on Sunday morning. This will likely be a significant round of severe weather that moves across south Alabama and northwest Florida. I will likely have that ready by 9PM. Be sure to check back with me for the latest tonight and tomorrow morning in our forecast video.
