SUNNY, HOT TUESDAY; COOLER, DRIER AIR IN ABOUT ONE WEEK… Mostly sunny skies are likely on this Tuesday across Alabama and northwest Florida. High temperatures will be in the mid-90s across the region with heat index values near or just above 100° this afternoon in most spots. More heat is expected through Friday with high temps remaining in the upper-90s. Our weather pattern begins to slowly change on Saturday, however, with our first real chance of showers and thunderstorms. Slightly cooler, drier air will start to move in on Sunday into Monday, paving the way for our first taste of fall by the middle of the upcoming week.

HOT & DRY THROUGH END OF THE WEEK… Temperatures will remain well above our climatological averages for this time of year through Friday. High temperatures will be in the mid-90s with morning lows around 70°. We note that the “temperature norm” for our region for the first few days of October feature highs in the mid-80s with lows around 60.

NEXT REAL CHANCE OF RAIN THIS WEEKEND… A cold front will approach our area from the northwest this weekend, paving the way for scattered showers and thunderstorms to form on Saturday into Sunday. Severe weather is currently not expected. It won’t be an all day washout on Saturday, Sunday, or Monday, but there probably will be showers around at times.

COOLER, DRIER AIR NEXT WEEK… The highly advertised first cool air of fall will sneak into our area on Monday into Tuesday of the upcoming week. This won’t be cold air, but it will be slightly cooler, drier air that filters in behind an advancing cold front. High temperatures locally are expected to drop back into the upper-80s with morning lows in the low-60s.

HURRICANE WARNING FOR THE AZORES AS LORENZO APPROACHES… Hurricane Lorenzo continues to accelerate to the northeast over the east-central Atlantic Ocean. Hurricane Warnings are now in effect for many of the Azores islands southwest of Europe as hurricane force winds may be possible there as the core of Lorenzo passes near or just northwest of the islands in the next 24-36 hours. Lorenzo is expected to become a powerful extratropical storm in the next few days. No U.S. impacts are expected because of Hurricane Lorenzo.

GULF & CARIBBEAN REMAIN QUIET… Other than Hurricane Lorenzo, the remainder of the tropical Atlantic basin, including the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea, are quiet. No new tropical storm formation is expected in the next 3-5 days. We note that in the long term (14-15 days out), there have been some model signals of potential tropical development in the western Caribbean Sea. This is nothing to worry about right now, though. Model trends can and will change. We’ll keep you posted on what you need to know in the days ahead.
