CONFIDENCE INCREASING: NEXT WEEK ON TRACK TO BE COOLER… Confidence is high that temperatures will be cooler next week after several days of record-setting heat across Alabama and northwest Florida. We had multiple locales across south central Alabama, including Andalusia, McKenzie, and Red Level hit 100° today! That shatters the monthly high temperature record for the month of October. Model agreement is good, however, that we have multiple shots of cooler air finally coming down the pike next week. Let’s look at a few forecast details…
8:20PM EDIT… I mistakenly typed “August” instead of “October” in the secondary image headline. The secondary image headline should read, “Monday, October 7” not August. I guess this insane heat has me thinking we’re on August 7th!
MORE RECORD HEAT POSSIBLE FRIDAY… Bad news for Friday is that temperatures will again be in the mid- to upper-90s. I can’t rule out one or two locales even hitting 100° across Butler, Crenshaw, or Covington counties. The good news is rain chances for Friday have increased. There is a 20-30% chance of showers and storms in the afternoon and evening hours. We had a few downpours today near Spanish Fort and over west Alabama. We could have several more showers and storms that produce localized downpours on Friday. I expect most high school football games to be dry, however, as most of the storms should be long gone by 7PM.
COLD FRONT #1 IS WEAK, BUT IT WILL COOL US OFF… The first cold front we’re tracking will approach our area on Monday into Tuesday. I expect high temperatures to drop back into the mid-80s. Overnight lows will be in the mid-60s by Tuesday and Wednesday mornings in the upcoming week.
COLD FRONT #2 IS MORE UNCERTAIN, BUT COULD BRING MUCH COOLER AIR… Long time viewers and readers know that I don’t put much, if any, stock into the model ideas beyond 7 days out. This is because there is much more model uncertainty and volatility in that range. There is increasing agreement, however, that a reinforcing, stronger cold front may move our way by the end of next week in the October 10-12 range. This COULD (and I stress, COULD, as there is uncertainty involved) bring overnight lows down into the mid-40s by the end of next week with high temperatures potentially near 70°. This is one idea that seems to be gaining traction. We’ll keep you posted in the days ahead about specifics.
