HARD FREEZE LIKELY MONDAY NIGHT INTO TUESDAY MORNING… Multiple nights of temperatures below freezing are expected early next week. We will make a long advertised transition from above-average temperatures this week to below-average temperatures starting on Sunday. One (weak) cold front is actually crossing our region right now, ushering in slightly cooler temperatures for Friday. The bigger, more potent cold front arrives late Saturday into early Sunday along with a chance of rain and thunderstorms. High temperatures on Sunday and Monday will be in the 50s, but the overnight lows will be the big weather headline. We’ll be in the 20s across much of south Alabama and northwest Florida on both Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.

CLOUDY & COOLER ON FRIDAY… Overcast or mostly cloudy skies are expected tomorrow (Friday) with high temperatures in the 60s. Rain will be in progress for much of the day to our west. A few showers could happen as late Friday evening across west Alabama.

SHOWERS AND STORMS ON SATURDAY… Numerous showers and thunderstorms are likely on Saturday, particularly in the afternoon and evening hours, across the region. For now, the overall severe weather risk looks very low. While there will be modest amounts of certain atmospheric ingredients for severe storms like helicity and some wind shear, the limiting factor (very typical during winter around here) is instability. Most weather models show little to no instability being available for storms to strengthen. Thus, our forecast is calling for rain and a few thunderstorms with thunder and lightning being the main concerns. It is a classic case of “general thunderstorms,” aka storms that sound and might look a lot worse than they actually are.

MUCH COOLER AIR FILTERS IN ON SUNDAY… You’ll notice a stark change in the air temperature by Sunday as cold, dry air filters in from the northwest behind the powerful cold front that will have moved by our area. High temperatures on Sunday will be in the 55-59° range across our region. Most spots probably won’t make it to the freezing mark Sunday night into Monday (forecast lows currently in the 33-37° range) but we almost certainly will be below freezing Monday night into Tuesday morning.
