16 YEARS AGO TONIGHT – HURRICANE IVAN… As we continue to watch category 1 and prolific rainmaker Hurricane Sally in the northern Gulf this evening, we reflect on where we all were 16 years ago tonight. The “benchmark” hurricane for many people across our area happened on this night 16 years ago with landfall happening just west of Gulf Shores, Alabama on September 16, 2004. Ivan made landfall in Baldwin County as a category 3, major hurricane. Damage and destruction was widespread and extensive across south Alabama and northwest Florida. Inland communities like Brewton, Atmore, and Monroeville were particularly hard hit with thousands of trees being knocked down. Definitely the worst hurricane I’ve ever been through personally, and one that I’ll forever remember – 16 years ago tonight.
NEXT SALLY UPDATE… We will go into long form live severe weather coverage if tornado warnings are needed at any point this evening, overnight, or on Wednesday. Until then, I will have ongoing updates in the RedZone Weather app. I will have another detailed LIVE look at the overall Sally situation later this evening. Stay safe and stay dry!
