GOOD NEWS TO REPORT: NEW TROPICAL STORM NOT EXPECTED NEAR SOUTH FLORIDA… The National Hurricane Center indicated earlier today (Sunday, Sep. 20) that a small tropical area of low pressure over the southern part of the Florida Peninsula had a 10-20% chance of developing into a tropical storm as it moved westward into the eastern part of the Gulf of Mexico. That chance has now dwindled to a near 0% chance, per the latest Tropical Weather Outlook issued by NHC.

8PM NHC DISCUSSION… “A weak area of low pressure located inland over southwestern Florida is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms over portions of the Florida peninsula. The low is forecast to move west-southwestward at about 10 mph over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico later tonight and Monday. Environmental conditions are not expected to be conducive, and significant development of this system is not anticipated.”

TROPICAL STORM BETA TO MOVE INTO TEXAS AND SLOW DOWN… Tropical Storm Beta is packing maximum sustained winds of 60 mph this evening as the system moves northwest toward the Texas coast. Landfall is expected some time on Monday during the afternoon hours. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect from Port Aransas, Texas to Morgan City, Louisiana, including areas near Houston, Galveston, and Cameron. The remnants of Beta will move northeast by the middle part of the week. Some showers and thunderstorms may be possible late Wednesday, Thursday, into Friday from Beta across parts of our area. There also could be a low-end tornado risk that sets up across Mississippi and west Alabama on Thursday, perhaps. Details on that will emerge in the days ahead.

WHAT TO EXPECT – OVERNIGHT… Scattered showers will continue at times overnight. Temperatures will be in the 60s for most, although some spots north of U.S. Highway 84 may briefly dip into the upper-50s on Monday morning.
