COOL, QUIET WEEK LOCALLY; HURRICANE IOTA WON’T BE A LOCAL THREAT… Get ready for a solid week of sunshine and nice, cool conditions. High temperatures across the region will struggle to get to 70 in many spots as a cool, north breeze keeps most locales in the upper-60s this afternoon. Keep the jacket handy this evening as temperatures will quickly dive into the 50s after sunset with overnight lows expected to be around 40 by daybreak on Tuesday. Clear skies are expected through at least Friday. Hurricane Iota is a dangerous, strengthening storm in the southwestern Caribbean Sea this morning. Iota could be devastating for parts of Central America in the days ahead, but there is very high confidence that Iota will never come close to Alabama or northwest Florida. A few Monday forecast notes are below.

HURRICANE IOTA APPROACHING NICARAGUA… Hurricane Iota continues to grow more powerful on this Monday. Landfall is expected tonight along the Nicaragua coast, perhaps just south of the Nicaragua/Honduras border. Significant impacts will be possible in Nicaragua, Honduras, and El Salvador. Heavy rain, flash flooding, and mudslides may also become a concern in parts of Guatemala and Belize later this week as well. This is NOT what this part of the world needs, especially right now. Hurricane Eta caused extreme impacts in these very same areas less than 2 weeks ago. We note that direct impacts in the United States are not expected due to Iota.

20% CHANCE OF DEVELOPMENT IN CARIBBEAN… This is a totally separate potential storm from Iota, but basically in the area where Hurricane Iota is now, there could be another tropical storm that forms in a few days. From NHC: “An area of low pressure could form in a few days over the central or southwestern Caribbean Sea. Development, if any, of this system should be slow to occur late this week while it moves slowly westward across the southwestern Caribbean Sea.”

THETA BECOMES POST-TROPICAL… Tropical Storm Theta, in the far eastern part of the Atlantic Ocean, is now off the board. The National Hurricane Center issued their final advisory on Tropical Storm Theta yesterday.

NICE, AUTUMN WEEK LOCALLY… Plenty of sunshine during the day and clear skies at night are expected over the next few days. High temperatures will gradually increase as we move toward the upcoming weekend but overall, temperatures will remain nice and cool in the days ahead.
