TORNADO WATCH CAPITAL OF THE WORLD… If I asked you what area of the country has had the highest number of tornado watches in 2020, what area would you guess? The Great Plains? Nope. Traditional “tornado alley?” Nope, not even close. The real “winner” of the most number of tornado watches this year is right here in our back yard in south Alabama and northwest Florida.
BALDWIN COUNTY LEADS THE PACK… The numerous severe weather & tornado events of the spring in combination with the hyperactive hurricane season have caused our area to go under tornado watches 10 to 14 times in 2020 alone. Butler County, AL had the fewest number of tornado watch issuances locally with 10 total. Baldwin County, AL had the most with 14 tornado watches issued this year! Baldwin County, AL (along with Walton, Washington, Holmes, Jackson, and Gulf counties in the Florida Panhandle) lead the nation this year with 14 tornado watch issuances.
LACK OF TORNADOES THIS YEAR IN TORNADO ALLEY… It is worth noting that parts of what is normally considered “tornado alley” had ZERO tornado watches this year. Notice the big swath of no tornado watches in the attached map from South Dakota southward through Nebraska, Kansas, and into western Oklahoma.
