SEVERE WEATHER THREAT CONTINUES TO DIMINISH; LOUD STORMS POSSIBLE OVERNIGHT… The risk of tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail is now quite low across our region now that a line of strong to severe storms has moved south toward the coast and worked over the atmosphere. The tornado watch and severe thunderstorm watch have been cancelled for all local counties. We will continue to have intermittent heavy rain, lightning, and perhaps loud thunder at times overnight into Wednesday morning. I will be closely monitoring a batch of storms currently firing to our west across eastern Louisiana and southeast Mississippi. These storms will likely remain under severe limits in most cases, but I cannot completely rule out a brief stronger storm overnight with gusty winds and hail being possible. The overall tornado risk overnight will be quite low. The “bark will be way worse than the bite” in most cases concerning the overnight storms.
WIDESPREAD DAMAGE INLAND… Numerous photos and reports of trees being down have come in over the last few hours from inland counties. Widespread tree damage seems to be most numerous across Clarke County, where damage has been reported in and near Coffeeville, Thomasville, Bashi, Campbell, and Grove Hill. We also had confirmed damage to a shed structure near Camden with trees down. Numerous trees are apparently also down across Greenville, AL in Butler County. Damage was also reported in northern Covington County near Gantt and Clearview near Gantt Lake. Multiple tornadoes happened earlier this evening just to our north across central Alabama.
WHAT TO EXPECT – OVERNIGHT INTO EARLY WEDNESDAY… Rain and thunderstorms are set to continue. Despite the severe weather risk now being much lower, there is a real chance we could have some thunderstorms overnight that are quite loud. There is a small chance a few of these storms could briefly turn strong and produce gusty winds and small hail, but we are confident that the overall tornado risk is very low.
