SCATTERED STORMS THIS AFTERNOON AND INTO THE WEEKEND… We finally have some rain in the forecast! A few showers and thunderstorms will become possible this afternoon and in the afternoons ahead this weekend. Widespread severe weather is not expected today or this weekend, but a few of the storms could be locally intense, with heavy rain, cloud-to-ground lightning, and perhaps even gusty winds in the strongest of the storms. High temperatures today and this weekend will be in the upper-80s near the coast and near 90 degrees inland. We get a break from the scattered storms on Monday and Tuesday ahead of increasing rain chances in the latter half of the upcoming week. A few more Friday morning forecast notes are below.
RAIN AND STORMS POSSIBLE AT TIMES THROUGH SUNDAY… Let me be clear that not every community will have rain or thunderstorms today or this weekend. Storms will be fairly scattered in nature and there is no way to know exactly where storms are going to fire up. These thunderstorms are called “pulse storms” as they fire up very quickly and dissipate shortly thereafter. Most thunderstorms that happen in late spring and summer around our region are not severe, but these storms can “pack a punch” at times with localized, torrential downpours of rain and lots of lightning.
MAINLY SUNNY FOR MEMORIAL DAY MONDAY… We trend drier, briefly, on Memorial Day Monday. Highs on Monday will rise into the low-90s across much of our region.
MORE SHOWERS & STORMS NEXT WEEK… Rain chances start to rise Tuesday into Wednesday as we begin to settle into a typical summertime pattern. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will become the norm each day with high temperatures near 90 and morning lows around 70.
TROPICS QUIET… The National Hurricane Center continues to indicate that no tropical storms are expected to form over the next 5-7 days anywhere across the Atlantic Basin. The basin includes the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, and northern Atlantic Ocean. The 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season will officially kick off on Tuesday, June 1.
