SCATTERED P.M. STORMS TODAY; T.S. GRACE WELL TO OUR SOUTH… Scattered thunderstorms are likely to pop up this afternoon into this evening across south Alabama and northwest Florida, as we have a 60-70% chance of rain today. High temperatures will be in the low-90s this afternoon. Thankfully, no tropical systems are headed our way at the moment, although we continue to track Tropical Storm Grace and Tropical Storm Henri in the Atlantic Basin. Your full Wednesday forecast is below.

GRACE LIKELY TO AFFECT YUCATAN AS A HURRICANE… Tropical Storm Grace continues to lash Jamaica this morning with heavy rain and gusty winds. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for part of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, including areas near Cancun as Grace is expected to strengthen to hurricane status soon. Landfall is likely along the northeastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula as Grace continues to push westward. The latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center shows Grace likely making a second Mexico landfall somewhere south of Texas in about 4 days, likely as a hurricane. Fortunately, Grace will not ever directly affect our local area in south Alabama or northwest Florida.

TROPICAL STORM HENRI SOUTH OF BERMUDA… Another system that is likely to remain far away from our local area is Tropical Storm Henri. The storm is located south of Bermuda in the open waters of the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Henri could become a hurricane over the next few days as the system drifts slowly westward. A sharp turn to the northeast is expected in 3-4 days as Henri begins moving out to sea.

NO NEW IMMINENT TROPICAL CONCERNS… Outside of Grace and Henri, no new tropical storms are expected to form over the next 3-5 days. The Atlantic Hurricane Season climatologically peaks on September 11 each year. Hurricane season runs through November 30.

BUILDING HEAT THIS WEEKEND INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK… Our big weather story locally over the next several days will be increasing heat and humidity. By Sunday, afternoon high temperatures are likely to be in the mid- or upper-90s in many spots. Heat index values will likely be in excess of 105° on Sunday and Monday, perhaps extending into the middle part of the upcoming week.
