NICE, WARM WEEKEND; NO RAIN EXPECTED SATURDAY OR SUNDAY… Low rain chances and mostly sunny skies will be the headline weather features this weekend across south Alabama and northwest Florida. High temperatures will be in the mid-80s each day with morning lows in the mid-60s. We have a very low chance of a few showers and thunderstorms today. I expect any storms that develop to be short-lived and fairly brief. Saturday and Sunday should be completely dry with plenty of sunshine each day.
FEW SHOWERS & STORMS NEXT WEEK… Scattered showers and thunderstorms will become more pronounced in our local forecast as we get into the middle part of the upcoming week as winds yet again shift from out of the south, ushering in plenty of Gulf moisture. Right now, there are no signs of a widespread, significant severe weather event in our local forecast, however. Good news!
SEVERE STORMS POSSIBLE WELL TO OUR WEST… The Storm Prediction Center has defined a significant severe weather risk zone for parts of Oklahoma and the southern Great Plains both on Sunday and on Tuesday. SPC maintains a Level 3 (out of 5) enhanced risk for a fairly small area, including parts of Oklahoma, on Sunday. A separate risk may set up on Tuesday across parts of Texas and Oklahoma.
LOW-END CHANCE OF TROPICAL DEVELOPMENT NEAR CAROLINA COAST… The National Hurricane Center indicates there is a low-end (20-30%) chance of a tropical storm developing in the western Atlantic Ocean near the coast of North Carolina over the next day or so. Regardless of if this system becomes a named tropical storm, it will not ever directly affect Alabama or northwest Florida. From NHC: “A weak area of low pressure located about 100 miles off the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina continues to produce disorganized showers and thunderstorms, well to the northeast of the center of circulation. Strong upper-level winds should limit significant tropical or subtropical development during the next few days while the low moves northeastward at about 5 mph off the coasts of the Carolinas. Some non-tropical development will be possible over the weekend due to the system interacting with a frontal boundary. Regardless of development, this system could bring gusty winds and locally heavy rain to portions of the Carolinas through the weekend.”
GULF OF MEXICO & CARIBBEAN SEA REMAIN QUIET… No imminent tropical development is expected in the Gulf of Mexico or the Caribbean Sea over the next 5 days. We note the MDR (main development region) of the Atlantic Ocean (between the Lesser Antilles and Africa) is also quiet with no tropical storms expected to develop in that zone either.
