POP-UP STORMS LOCALLY LATER TODAY; FIRST DAY OF HURRICANE SEASON… Scattered pop-up showers and thunderstorms will be possible at times this afternoon into this evening on this Wednesday. High temperatures will again be in the low-90s across the region. Widespread severe weather is not expected today but some of the pop-up storms may pack a punch and be capable of producing gusty winds, heavy rain, and cloud-to-ground lightning. Storms like this (that primarily pop up in the afternoon and evening hours) will be possible in each of the next 7 days.

2022 ATLANTIC HURRICANE SEASON STARTS TODAY… The 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season starts today. NOAA and Colorado State University, the two premier hurricane season forecasters, are both calling for an above average hurricane season in terms of the number of named storms, hurricanes, and major hurricanes. Hurricane season will run through November 30.

2022 ATLANTIC HURRICANE NAMES… The tropical name lists for this year are: Alex, Bonnie, Colin, Danielle, Earl, Fiona, Gaston, Hermine, Ian, Julia, Karl, Lisa, Martin, Nicole, Owen, Paula, Richard, Shary, Tobias, Virginie, and Walter. In the event that we run out of names on the primary naming list, subsequent tropical storms and hurricanes will be named from the Auxiliary List, which has replaced the Greek Alphabet. Adria, Braylen, Carded, Deshawn, Emery, Foster, Gemma, and Heath are the first few names on the Auxiliary List.

TROPICAL DISTURBANCE OVER MEXICO… The National Hurricane Center continues to suggest that a tropical disturbance currently located inland over Mexico has a growing chance of becoming the first named tropical storm of the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season. This tropical disturbance has a 70-80% chance of becoming a tropical storm in the southern Gulf of Mexico or the western Caribbean Sea. Impacts from this system, regardless of if formal development happens, will be possible in South Florida. We note that the primary impact will probably be heavy rain and flash flooding for places like the Florida Keys, Miami, and Fort Myers. Local impacts in south Alabama and northwest Florida are not expected from this system as it will move too far to our southeast to cause any local problems.
