NOT *AS* HOT TODAY (STILL HOT); RECORD-SETTING HEAT LATER THIS WEEK… Make no mistake, we will have hot temperatures around this afternoon, but temperatures won’t be AS hot as what is expected later this week. There is a real chance we may set the all-time hottest temperature record for the month of June later this week, specifically on Thursday. Today, high temperatures will be in the upper-90s with heat index values also in the upper-90s and low-100s. We aren’t having as much in the way of heat issues today as a boundary moved through the area this weekend from the north, knocking down dewpoint temperatures to more reasonable values. Unfortunately, Gulf moisture will return into our area later this week at just the wrong time when air temperature values are set to be in the low-100s. That means extreme heat is ahead, particularly on Wednesday and Thursday.

FEW STORMS AROUND THIS AFTERNOON INTO THIS EVENING… Rain chances are not particularly high today, but rain chances are also not at zero today. A few showers and thunderstorms may develop this afternoon into this evening and drift westward. Rain chances are most elevated today in Mobile and Baldwin counties, although even outside of those two counties, a few showers and storms may happen. Widespread severe weather is not expected today or in any of the next 3-4 days. I will have radar updates posted as needed today in the RedZone Weather app.

JUNE TEMPERATURE RECORDS MAY FALL LATER THIS WEEK… The big weather headline in the days ahead will be the extreme temperatures set to happen on Wednesday and Thursday. Projected high temperatures (what is visible on the thermometer) will be in the 103-105° range with heat index values as high as 120° by Thursday. Heat advisories and potentially even excessive heat warnings will be required.

TROPICS QUIET… The tropical disturbance being tracked last week near Honduras in the western Caribbean Sea continues to produce heavy rain across parts of the western Caribbean Sea today. This system is no longer expected to develop into a named tropical storm as upper-level winds remain unfavorable for any further development. The remainder of the Atlantic Basin, including the Gulf of Mexico, is quiet. No tropical storms are expected to develop over the next 5 days.
