SUNNY, DRY WEEK AHEAD; HURRICANE FIONA IN THE ATLANTIC… Sunny skies are expected on this Monday as we kick off what will be the driest week we have had in months. Full sunshine each day will allow high temperatures to climb into the mid-90s over the next few days. Some spots may hit the upper-90s by Wednesday and Thursday. An area of high pressure is expected to keep our local area dry through the upcoming weekend. We continue to monitor Hurricane Fiona, centered northwest of Puerto Rico in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. It can be confidently stated at this point that Hurricane Fiona will NOT directly affect south Alabama or northwest Florida. Fiona will move north in the days ahead. A few more Monday morning forecast notes are below.

HURRICANE FIONA UNLIKELY TO DIRECTLY AFFECT CONTINENTAL UNITED STATES… Hurricane Fiona made landfall yesterday afternoon in the southwestern corner of Puerto Rico with maximum winds near 85 mph. Fiona continues to slowly strengthen and is expected to become a major hurricane in the days ahead as a general northwesterly movement continues. Today, Fiona will basically parallel the coast of the Dominican Republic before turning north near the Turks & Caicos islands. The National Hurricane Center forecast for Fiona shows potential impacts being possible in Bermuda later this week. There is a high chance Fiona will be a major hurricane while passing Bermuda. Fortunately for the continental United States, significant impacts from Hurricane Fiona are NOT expected at this time. Fiona will remain east of the U.S.

REST OF THE TROPICAL ATLANTIC IS QUIET… The Gulf of Mexico and the remainder of the central Atlantic (away from Hurricane Fiona) are quiet with no new tropical storms expected to develop over the next 5-7 days.
