MORE P.M. STORMS TODAY AND INTO THE WEEKEND… Scattered thunderstorms will continue to headline our weather forecast across south Alabama and northwest Florida both today and into the weekend. Widespread severe weather is NOT expected but some of the storms may be on the strong side, producing cloud-to-ground lightning, heavy rain, gusty winds, and loud thunder. High temperatures will be around 90° today with heat index values in excess of 100° in many spots.
HIGHER TEMPERATURES NEXT WEEK; HIGH INDEX VALUES… Rain chances will decrease next week as an upper ridge of high pressure builds over much of the continental United States. That means our local area will trend into a drier, hotter pattern. Temperatures will be in the mid- to upper-90s with heat index values likely to be in excess of 110° by Thursday.
DISTURBANCE IN ATLANTIC; CALVIN IN PACIFIC; GULF QUIET… The tropical update for today is good news for south Alabama and northwest Florida in that we are NOT expecting any tropical storms to form in the Gulf of Mexico or the Caribbean Sea in the next 5-7 days. The National Hurricane Center continues to note that an area of disturbed weather now well east of Bermuda in the open waters of the northern Atlantic Ocean has a 40-50% chance of becoming a tropical storm while moving north. No direct land impacts are expected from this system, regardless of if formal development happens. Hurricane Calvin is rapidly moving west in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Moisture from Calvin may reach Hawaii in 5-7 days, but the system should be much weaker on approach to Hawaii.
