NOT AS MANY SCATTERED STORMS TODAY; INCREASINGLY HOT TEMPS IN DAYS AHEAD… Heat index values will be in excess of 105° today and in the days ahead across parts of south Alabama and northwest Florida. Lower (not zero!) rain chances are expected today and especially over the next few days as a large ridge of high pressure keeps our local weather pattern a bit drier. A few storms will be possible today but most communities will remain dry.
LOWER RAIN CHANCES THROUGH THURSDAY; HIGH HEAT INDEX VALUES… Rain chances will NOT be zero at any point over the next week, but chances WILL be much lower compared to the last few weeks. High temperatures will be in the upper-90s by Thursday with heat index values likely to be in the 110-115° range.
SUBTROPICAL DEPRESSION DON IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN… Don, a subtropical depression over the open waters of the northern Atlantic Ocean, continues to lose organization. The storm started as an area of disturbed weather last week before briefly becoming a named subtropical storm over the weekend. Don is expected to loop around in the northern Atlantic Ocean, well away from land, before dissipating at some point this weekend or next week. No direct U.S. impacts are expected from Subtropical Depression Don.
T.S. CALVIN APPROACHING HAWAII… Tropical Storm Calvin, located well away from any land areas in the eastern Pacific Ocean, continues to quickly move westward. The storm will approach the Hawaiian Islands over the next few days. Calvin is explicitly forecast to be a tropical storm on approach to Hawaii later this week. Calvin will never come close to the continental United States. Interests in Hawaii should closely monitor the progress of Tropical Storm Calvin.
GULF & CARIBBEAN QUIET, FOR NOW… The Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea are not expected to have any tropical storms developing over the next 5-7 days. While sea surface temperatures in the Gulf and Caribbean are well above our climatological norms for this time of year, SSTs are only one factor in tropical storm development. The climatological peak of hurricane season happens on September 11.
