HOTTER TEMPS RETURN THIS WEEK; LOW-END RAIN CHANCES… Temperatures will increase into the mid-90s later this week with mostly sunny days in store through the upcoming weekend. Rain chances will be LOW (not zero, but low) over the next several days. A few widely scattered showers and thunderstorms may bubble up this afternoon into this evening. IF any storms happen, the most likely area for development would be over parts of west Alabama, specifically in areas along and west of the Alabama River. Most spots will remain mostly sunny and dry today. High temperatures will be in the low-90s with heat index values in the mid-90s on this Monday.
TROPICS: GULF AND CARIBBEAN QUIET… It should be emphasized, despite a flurry of activity in the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea remain quiet for now. No tropical storms are expected to develop over the next 5-7 days in the Gulf or the Caribbean Sea. The peak of the Atlantic hurricane season happens on September 11, thus any areas of concern that develop must be diligently monitored in the weeks ahead.
TROPICS: GERT EAST OF BERMUDA… Tropical Storm Gert, the storm that seemingly “just won’t die,” is located several hundred miles east of Bermuda in the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Gert was a weak, short-lived tropical storm just northeast of the Lesser Antilles back in late August (11 days ago!). The system weakened to remnant low status before redeveloping over the weekend. Gert won’t last long this time either, with the system explicitly forecast to dissipate over the cooler waters of the northern Atlantic Ocean in a few days.
TROPICS: KATIA WELL AWAY FROM LAND AREAS… Tropical Storm Katia also developed over the weekend. The system is located about as far away from any land areas as you can get in the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Katia will dissipate in a few days while meandering around the central Atlantic Ocean and remaining fairly weak.
TROPICS: 90% CHANCE OF TROPICAL DEVELOPMENT IN ATLANTIC… This is the tropical system to watch in the days ahead. The National Hurricane Center indicates there is a 90% chance of a tropical storm developing as a potent tropical wave continues moving east in the central Atlantic Ocean. From NHC: “Showers and thunderstorms associated with a tropical wave located several hundred miles southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands have become better organized since yesterday. Environmental conditions are forecast to be conducive for further development, and this system is expected to become a tropical depression around midweek. Additional strengthening is likely late this week while the system moves westward to west-northwestward at 15 to 20 mph over the central and western portions of the tropical Atlantic.”
TROPICS: 30% CHANCE OF TROPICAL DEVELOPMENT NEAR CABO VERDE ISLANDS… Just east of the tropical wave in the Atlantic that has the higher development chances (discussed above), another tropical wave is set to come off of the African coast over the next few days. The National Hurricane Center indicates this tropical wave has about a 30% chance of becoming a named tropical storm near the Cabo Verde Islands. Beyond that, plenty of uncertainty as to where that specific system ultimately ends up. Most of the global models show movement into the open waters of the eastern Atlantic Ocean.
