PARTLY CLOUDY TODAY; RAIN POSSIBLE LATER THIS WEEK… Rain is finally in the forecast later this week but not before a streak of dry, nice weather days today through Thursday. High temperatures will be in the low-80s today with partly cloudy skies throughout the day. Overnight lows by 6AM Tuesday will be in the low-50s with some communities farther inland likely dipping into the upper-40s.
DRY CONDITIONS THROUGH THURSDAY; RAIN POSSIBLE FRIDAY… Rain chances will begin to rise Thursday evening into Friday as a frontal boundary approaches from the northwest. While a big rain event seems rather unlikely, scattered showers seem likely later this week, particularly in the A.M. hours of Friday. Rain amounts will likely end up being less than a half inch of rainfall in total across the region.
DROUGHT CONDITIONS CONTINUE TO WORSEN… The rain in the forecast on Friday will certainly be beneficial, although certainly not “drought busting” by any stretch. Much of southwest Alabama and northwest Florida is now involved in the Level 3 (out of 4) extreme drought zone. Drought conditions will continue to worsen over the next week or so. While long time viewers and readers know that I do not put much stock into the long range forecasts (beyond 7 days out), I am optimistic that we will see more in the way of rainfall toward the latter half of November and into the month of December. Typically, the southeastern United States experiences above average precipitation values during El Niño years. The current phase of ENSO is in the El Niño phase, meaning rain may become more likely in the weeks and months ahead. Good news!
TROPICS NOW QUIET… For the first time in several weeks, the entirety of the Atlantic Basin does not have any tropical hotspots, meaning no tropical storms or hurricanes are expected to develop over the next 5 days. The 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season will officially end on Thursday, November 30.
