QUITE HOT & HUMID THIS WEEK WITH P.M. STORMS; BERYL MOVES INTO TEXAS… Locally, heat, humidity, and pop-up showers and thunderstorms will remain a fixture of the forecast over the next 5-7 days with today being no exception. Rain chances will be greatest across west Alabama today. High temperatures will be in the mid-90s with heat index values again in the 105-110° range in many spots. The good news is we no longer have uncertainty as far as where the system that once was Hurricane Beryl will end up. Beryl moves north across east Texas today and ultimately will rapidly move northeast through Arkansas over the next day or so. Behind Beryl, the remainder of the tropical Atlantic basin is quiet.

HIGHER RAIN CHANCES ON TUESDAY… Scattered thunderstorms will happen this afternoon into this evening locally, specifically in areas along and west of the Alabama River. That isn’t to say we won’t have storms elsewhere across the region, but that is where chances will be highest this afternoon into this evening. Tomorrow, storm coverage is expected to increase across the entire region. Widespread severe weather is not expected, but some of the storms will be loud and proud at times.

INCREASING TEMPERATURES LATER THIS WEEK… That certainly is not the headline anyone wants to hear as, quite frankly, it’s too hot as it is already. High temperatures later in the week will be in the mid- to upper-90s. I cannot completely rule out a few spots briefly hitting the 100 degree mark on Friday or Saturday. Humidity values will remain elevated, thus I am expecting most of the area to be involved with a Heat Advisory or even an Excessive Heat Warning as heat index values will surge into the 110-115° range.

BERYL TO MOVE NORTH ACROSS EAST TEXAS… The remnants of Beryl, the storm that once was a Category 5 hurricane in the Caribbean Sea, will continue to be a problem for east Texas today. Gusty winds, particularly near the Texas coast, high rain amounts that will likely lead to flash flooding, and tornadoes will be a concern across land areas in east Texas today. The tornado risk extends into parts of western Louisiana and Arkansas today into tonight as well. Storm surge will continue to be a problem along parts of the Texas coast. The overall risk of rip currents ACROSS the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico (including locally!) will remain elevated over the next few days.

REMAINDER OF TROPICS QUIET… The Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean are quiet with no new tropical storms expected to develop over the next 5 days. The Saharan Air Layer (SAL), a dry, dusty air mass, has become more pronounced across the tropical Atlantic, likely inhibiting immediate development over the next several days. Good news!
