SWELTERING HEAT & HUMIDITY TODAY; ISOLATED P.M. STORMS… Heat index values will be in the 105-112° range today with a Heat Advisory in place for ALL local counties from 10AM to 7PM. Hot and humid conditions, unfortunately, will persist into Thursday and Friday as well. Rain chances are a bit lower today and tomorrow compared to the last few days but even so, there may be a few widely scattered thunderstorms this afternoon into this evening. Most communities across the region will remain dry, hot, and humid today. Higher rain chances are ahead as we go into the upcoming weekend and temperatures will be a bit more manageable with highs in the low-90s this weekend.
60% CHANCE OF TROPICAL STORM FORMATION NEAR THE BAHAMAS SOON… Right now, a tropical wave is located near the northern Leeward Islands. This tropical feature will continue to move west-northwest over the next few days, passing near or just north of Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic/Haiti, and the Turks & Caicos Islands. Once this system reaches the Turks & Caicos and The Bahamas in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean, strengthening and more organization may happen. The National Hurricane Center indicates there is a 60% chance of the system becoming a named tropical storm. The good news is model consistency has increased suggesting the system will make a northerly turn when it reaches The Bahamas. IF this scenario panned out, it would mean our local area in south Alabama and northwest Florida would not have direct local impacts. The forecast still has some uncertainty involved, but the trends so far have been good news for our local area.
GULF & CARIBBEAN REMAIN QUIET; NEW TROPICAL WAVE IN ATLANTIC… Outside of the tropical wave discussed above, the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea remain quiet with no new tropical storms expected to develop over the next several days. We will be watching a new, separate tropical wave emerging from the coast of Africa in the far eastern Atlantic Ocean over the next few days. Some models have hinted at the idea of development in the central Atlatnic in a few days but the system won’t be an issue for North America for quite some time (if ever).
