RAIN CHANCES INCREASING TODAY INTO TONIGHT… Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible throughout the day and into tonight across south Alabama and northwest Florida on this Thursday. Widespread severe storms are not expected today but you may hear thunder at times. Pockets of heavier rain will also be possible, particularly in the storms closer to the immediate coast. High temperatures will only be in the low-80s today due to all of the clouds and rain around. More rain is expected on Friday.
3-4″ OF TOTAL RAINFALL NEAR COAST; SLIGHTLY LOWER AMOUNTS INLAND… The latest rainfall projections show 3-4″ of total rainfall being possible closer to the coast through Sunday. Keep in mind that the 3-4″ of rainfall would not happen all at once but would stack up to those amounts over the next few days. Rain amounts farther inland will be in the 1-2″ range in total.
TROPICS: MULTIPLE SYSTEMS BUT NO IMMINENT LOCAL THREATS… The National Hurricane Center has highlighted four, distinct areas of note in the Atlantic Basin on this Thursday. These four tropical disturbances all have at least some chance to develop into named tropical storms but those chances are maxed out currently at around a 30% chance. The first tropical wave is located in the Caribbean Sea, now just west of Jamaica. This system is moving toward the Yucatan Peninsula. Two tropical waves in the central Atlantic Ocean are moving west-northwest. Another, separate disturbance in the northwestern Atlantic near Bermuda is gradually moving northeast that may become a subtropical or tropical storm in the days ahead. None of these systems pose any type of threat today or over the next several days to Alabama or northwest Florida. The climatological peak of hurricane season happens on September 11.
