SUNNY, NICE MONDAY; ACTIVE TROPICS… Mostly sunny skies are expected today across south Alabama and northwest Florida. High temperatures will be in the upper-80s and near the 90 degree mark. Despite a flurry of activity across the Atlantic Basin, including a tropical disturbance projected to develop later this week in the Caribbean Sea that will probably move into the southern Gulf of Mexico, right now we have no significant tropical impacts in the forecast for south Alabama and northwest Florida. This is because uncertainty surrounding the tropical system expected to develop remains quite high.
CARIBBEAN DISTURBANCE LIKELY TO MOVE INTO GULF; DETAILS BEYOND THAT NOT CLEAR… The National Hurricane Center continues to indicate a tropical disturbance is expected to develop in the western Caribbean Sea over the next few days. This system has a 40-50% chance of becoming a named tropical storm as the system moves north. It is not a foregone conclusion that the system will actually develop into a named storm. It very well may not. No way to know just yet where the system ends up, regardless of if formal development happens. Some models show movement toward Mexico while others show movement to the north or east. I will keep you posted on this developing system over the next few days. This is simply something to monitor, but nothing to stress over at this point.
TROPICAL STORM ISAAC IN THE FAR NORTHERN ATLANTIC OCEAN… Tropical Storm Isaac continues to move eastward in the northern Atlantic Ocean. The system is expected to become an extratropical system today or tonight after being a hurricane over the weekend. No direct impacts to the U.S. are expected from Isaac.
TROPICAL STORM JOYCE IN THE OPEN WATERS OF THE ATLANTIC… Tropical Storm Joyce continues to be a rather weak, disorganized tropical storm, located well away from land areas in the Atlantic Ocean. The system is expected to dissipate over the next several days.
TROPICAL DEPRESSION 12 IN THE ATLANTIC… Several hundred miles to the southeast of Tropical Storm Joyce, we find a newly designated (as of last evening) tropical depression. Tropical Depression Twelve is well away from land areas and will continue to be away from land in the days ahead. The system will likely become a major hurricane over the open Atlantic Ocean in about 4-5 days as the system turns northward.
ONE OTHER DISTURBANCES IN FAR EASTERN ATLANTIC… In addition to Isaac, Joyce, and TD12, I am also keeping tabs on a tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic Ocean that has a chance of becoming a named tropical storm over the next few days. This tropical wave has a 30% chance of becoming a named tropical storm as it generally moves westward.
