NICE SUNDAY; SHOWERS & STORMS ON MONDAY EVENING… This Sunday evening will be quite nice, but we are looking ahead to the afternoon and evening hours of Monday when scattered showers and thunderstorms will return to south Alabama and northwest Florida. The Storm Prediction Center has included the northern stretches of our region in their Level 1 (out of 5) marginal severe weather risk for the P.M. hours of Monday. The risk zone is in place due to a low-end potential for damaging straight line winds in the stronger storms that may happen. The tornado risk on Monday remains very low, if not zero, in most spots. Temperatures on this Sunday afternoon will peak in the upper-70s in most spots across the region with partly cloudy skies.
CLOUDS INCREASE MONDAY MORNING BEFORE STORMS… The Monday morning commute should be dry in most spots. Rain chances will spike after the lunch hour on Monday. You’ll notice an increasing amount of cloud coverage throughout the day. Temperatures by 3PM Monday should be near the 80 degree mark. We will begin to monitor the local radars for showers and storms in the early part of the afternoon…
SHOWERS & STORMS MONDAY EVENING… The greatest chance of rain will happen during the evening hours of Monday as a cold front approaches from the northwest. The low-end risk of a few strong storms across our northern counties will happen from 4PM to 10PM Monday evening. Again, the tornado risk remains near zero. The concern will be because of any storms that can ramp up and produce briefly damaging gusts of wind.
LEVEL 1 RISK: WHO IS INVOLVED… Much of central Alabama is included in the Level 1 (out of 5) marginal severe weather risk zone on Monday. The risk does include Clarke, Monroe, Conecuh, Butler counties in our local area. We also note that Birmingham, Auburn, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, Selma, Alexander City, Anniston, Demopolis, Eufaula, Troy, and Camden are included just to our north.
BIG TAKEAWAYS FOR LEVEL 1 RISK… Scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are likely Monday evening, especially across central Alabama. Most areas will have some rain and thunder. I do not expect any widespread severe weather. The risk of a tornado warning happening is very low (probably in the 0-10% chance range). Keep an eye on the radar tomorrow and be sure to check for updates in the RedZone Weather app in the evening hours. I’ll keep you posted there.
NICER WEATHER MIDWEEK… Cooler, drier air will surge into our area from the northwest on Tuesday. Clouds will move out Tuesday morning and we should have a good bit of sunshine in place for the afternoon and evening hours. Full sunshine is expected both on Wednesday and on Thursday. High temperatures will drop back to around 70° with overnight lows on Wednesday and Thursday morning in the mid-40s.
ANOTHER ROUND OF RAIN/STORMS NEXT WEEKEND… Our next chance of rain (after Monday evening) happens late Friday into Saturday when a warm, wet pattern sets up across our region. There could be a few storms involved. Too early to know details, but if you’re planning a trip to the beach next weekend, be aware that we could have rain around. EARTHQUAKE UPDATE… I am still in the process of confirming the apparent earthquake that happened this morning across northern Santa Rosa County, FL and southern Escambia County, AL. Ground/house shaking was reported near Jay, Mt. Carmel, and Pollard in a pattern that points to the 5th minor earthquake this month for these areas. See more details about this here.
